Hmm, does the 04 have the proximity card key as an option?

If you have a proximity card key, pressing the button on the passenger side front door unlocks both front doors.

Does your driver side door handle not have it?

Somebody might have replaced the passenger side door with one from a later model year.

Guys,

Sorry to have to dredge up an old thread. But I'm "new." I bought an RX-8 (2006) for my son. It's in decent or better shape, but not perfect of course. It has keyless entry with the small push-button (as is the thread topic). The RH door handle broke recently. He and I removed the door trim, looked in and the inside structure of the handle was sort of shattered.

I bought a new door handle. Question: The push-button wire is routed (toward the outer end of the door, and) around what appears to be a door frame member. The push-button's wire harness has a grommet on it that mounts on the inner door panel (behind the door trim, so the grommet / wire cannot be seen when the door trim is installed). The grommet doesn't seem to have enough room, or want to run around this door frame member. I could snip the broken handle's wire to get it out. But how do I get the new one in and around that door frame member? I could route in to the other side of that member, but I'm concerned about what might snag that wire if I do that.

I'll be working on it tonight, the last time I was messing with it, I didn't see how to loosen and move that door frame member. It's either a door frame member or part of the window regulator. I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced this button's wire harness previously and had any guidance.

Thanks!

Follow up, in case it helps anyone in the future. I completed this repair last night. It wasn't so terrible. I wound up cutting off the grommet on the old wire harness and it routed around that member easy enough, just barely enough room for the inside most connector end of the wire harness to get by the bracket.

That "member" is the Glass Run Bracket. That's the closest name I can sort of remember. To my memory, the Glass Run is the soft material the glass rides up and down in. The Glass Run Bracket is the bracket the Glass Run mounts too. I pulled the Glass Run out of the bracket to give more room for the wire harness and that helped. The Glass Run easily went back in the bracket when I was done.

Get this, I installed the new wire harness, and that grommet on the wire harness was a real difficult son of a gun to squeeze by the Glass Run Bracket. Once I got it by, I was happy. Immediately followed by realizing I didn't have enough wire harness slack to install the door handle. I had to push the sumbitch back out. Pushing it out was harder than pushing it back in. I'm so clever, that instead of having to push this grommet past the bracket once, I had to do it 3 times! Ha!

But after that, all went back together and it is good to go now. The new handle looks and works great.

Thanks!
