I bought some nylon straps to firmly secure my speakerbox in my trunk- it has tended to slowly work it's way out of it's wedged in position and a couple times has come loose on spirited drives. I think I've read a few folks have done this as well with their boxes... so...

Is there any concern with putting 1/2" screws in the trunk floor towards the back by the back seats (i.e. not in the recessed middle). Would there be any danger of hitting the gas tank?

The gas tank is under the rear seat. You'll probably just have to get under the car and take a look to be sure. This is the safest way to do it anyways.

G8rboy, if you find out about a safe way to drive screws into the trunk floor, please post your observations - I'm a bit nervous to drill holes myself...

i always punch from the bottom up to make absolutely certain..unless of course there isn't anything but open space below..

 

I forgot to update thislast night. The fuel tank is not a concern, but there are a few things to watch out for underneath. If you pull back the carpet you can see one of them, which is a wire bundle coming up through a rubber grommet on the driver's side of the trunk. There's also some rubber tubing (fuel overflow I think) also on that side fairly close to the where the wire is coming in. There is a good, safe and solid attachment point just behind the the recessed portion of the trunk- there's a reinforced steel beam that crosses the trunk lengthwise parallel to the recess.

Basically- you should do what XeRo said- climb underneath and validate the space you're going to be drilling through is clear... and go from the bottom up if possible (space is very tight though with the diff and halfshafts crossing right below).
