TapTurn Flasher Module

So I decided I wanted to change my signal bulbs to LEDs and didn’t want to have the fast-flash or add a load resistor. I read on some comments around here about the TapTurn flasher unit which is a direct plug-and-play replacement to our factory flasher. I ended up purchasing it from the TapTurn web-site (TapTurn - home) and figured I’d add some feedback & photos.

Installation:
The unit came with very clear instructions. The factory flasher is located under the steering wheel column behind the little card/coin pocket (note, I drive a right hand drive). This pulls directly off and the flasher is visible. I was able to reach from behind and disconnect/remove it fairly easy.

Fitment/Usage:
The part fits perfectly. It is the exact same dimension and the plug clicks in nicely.

The flash speed is the same as OEM and can be used with both LED and Halogen bulbs. I currently have Phillips Ultinon LED’s in the rear and the stock bulbs in the front. The TapTurn flasher module also adds the function of 3-flashes in one direction when the stalk is gently tapped (like euro cars) and then auto shuts off.

Other:
Some other functions include a Slow Motion flash for emergency lights and a “Wig-Wag” function that alternates between the left and right sides. These are activated by having the signal stalk clicked in either the left or right while the car is running and the emergency lights are on.
The part cost me $59 USD with shipping. I should note there are versions with some more functions such as strobe signals, additional hazard patterns and arrival/departure lights but I decided I didn't need those.

Used one before, but currently in my garage because I find the 3-flash to be triggered a lot more easily than I'd like at times, and while you can cancel it by tapping again, it just feels kinda annoying I had to do that.

Quick update:

I have changed the remaining signal bulbs in the headlights and the side markers to LEDs. The TapTurn module still works as advertised and there is no fast-flash.

The Philips Ultinons are great, but I cannot say the same for the Sylvania Zevo. The halogen bulbs are actually brighter than the Zevo...

Yep, can confirm that in a completely dark garage the halogens appear a little bit brighter compared to the Zevo. From a distance however, I personally found that they grab your attention all the same (especially due to the instant turn on on the LED compared to the small fade-in and fade-out of the halogen). Note that I've only taken the car out in the night so I'm yet to look at it during the day.

This post was more to show that the TapTurn module works with different bulbs/brands and combinations of LED/Halogen set ups. If I had to be OCD about it, I'd recommend the X-treme Ultinon all around - but they are crazy expensive where I am... About 60 USD per pair. I ended up getting all 6 bulbs above for about 50 USD together so I'm happy. Either way, my main goals were to remove any visible "orange" from all lights, have LEDs that face the reflector so they are not seen from the outside, and mainly... to satisfy more boredom.

When fitting LED turn signals if you change the capacitor on the OEM flasher to a value of 10uf it will stop the hyperflash and costs less than 15p (25 cents).

Hey how's it going. Not sure if you'll see this, but if you don't want to use it, would I be able to buy it from you please? Thanks! haha

Well, I may or may not have it still in a box somewhere.

You'd have to wait for 3 months since I am away from where I was. Once I go back I'd be able to take a look.

I was also looking for the TapTurn module, but it seems the maker has passed away.
Is there any alternative? I would like the 'tap' and turn for x times option very much.
Have it on my cheap daily driver and miss it on the RX.

Yep, I heard that he passed away unfortunately.

There are no alternatives that I am aware of. A member here did message me for the same reason and request photos from inside my unit in February. I sent them through but not sure if that ended up being useful - I don't think there was enough detail plus it looked like each module was made by hand.

Best bet would be to find a second hand one, but that's pretty rare. The 'tap' and turn is definitely a nice feature - the car should've really come stock with it.

I am having an issue where my hazards are stuck in all the time. I have to remove the signal relay to stop them and then I have no signal control. I am trying to determine is the issue is the relay or a short somewhere. My headlights were modified by the previous owner and have led strips and halos in them.

I just wanted to say a thanks for this tip. I just did it, and it works perfectly, no load resistors for me!

I change it to a "smart" module, have to import it from Russa and doing some basic wiring around, but really worth it.
Now the tap turn is working, one tap =>> 3 blinks and also can program the number of the blinks, LED works fine, relay sound is very pleasing too!

I said from Russia!
The guy does not speak any English and our communication was based on google translator :d I order two units and they arrived in few weeks,
I can send you his page links, but be ready to sign in to another platform like FB. Probably I should make a DIY thread.
He is tagged on the video I link, initially I was thinking to do marking for him, however, I dropped the idea, his products are great and use Japanese relay.

ON

So...no reply. And (probably because of what's going on) I can't even find the guy on IG now. Is the module easy enough to open up (like the stock ones)? Just wondering if we could get these re-created. I know that I still want one.

Guy, you need to search for a version which works on Toyota and swap the wiring of positive and negative on stalk.

I do report the full function of this model and very happy, it uses a microcontroller.
