SpeedSource Auction

As you may know, SpeedSource has shut its doors after around 20 years of factory Mazda racing. Their stuff is being auctioned off. Most of the rotary stuff is gone (friend bought a semi load of stuff) but there are a couple sets of carbon fiber RX8 bodies. These will likely not fit a stock chassis at all as they probably went on their tube framed GT cars.

Tons of amazing stuff on auction here. Would love to go.

I registered to bid online and did bid on a few things, but everything of interest went for roughly retail new cost or a little bit more. There was a set of scales (that maybe worked or maybe didn't) that sold for a decent price. There were a bunch of totes of springs that sold for pennies on the dollar, but you didn't know what you were getting (length, diameter, etc) and based on the packaging some of them were late 80's / early 90's vintage.

I'm really surprised what the carbon bodies went for. I guess if you owned one of the ex-Speedsource tube-frame RX-8 chassis that sold years ago then it maybe makes sense to drop $5k on a replacement body? Possibly?

Either way, it's sad to see them out of business.

A lot of those panels cost that much. I never figured out what the whole body kit was, but probably over $30k wouldn’t surprise me.

I didn’t bother myself. It looked like all the decent things were cherry picked in advance and it was just a storage locker gamble on maybe lucking on something decent buried in the leftovers pile.

I was late to the party and by the time I got logged in, most of the memorabilia that I was interested in was gone.

I was surprised at the prices some (most) of that stuff sold for, and that was before paying 18% more to the auction house.

$130 for an RX8 car cover?

Very few deals to be had. I think is again shows how money doesn't really matter in gentleman "pro" motorsports. Reminiscent of the Level 5 auction.

The $130 for a car cover made me actually laugh out loud when I saw that. "Auctions are for sellers, not buyers."

Mark, I'm sure those body panels cost a fortune to make. I'm just surprised there is still a market for them given how few of the tube frame cars are still around.

For a racer that was a great price though.
