The IGN-1A smart coils (also known as Mercury Marine Coils / AEM Smart Coils / Holly Smart Coils, etc.) have been proven over many years of testing in NA and forced induction applications to be the #1 choice for rotary ignition systems due to their ultra-fast recharge time, and extraordinarily high output potential at 103mJ, with a very long spark duration. These coils were designed for double duty cycle ignition events in mind, unlike any other piston coil out there, which makes them the perfect coil for the rotary. These have been tested on stock NA rotaries up to 700HP high boost turbo/E85 13b builds and work flawlessly. They're overbuilt to take a beating and last a lifetime at nearly any duty cycle and power demand. This is the last set of coils you'll buy for your RX8.





Coils:
Massive power potential with unbelievably fast recharge times. Remember, compared to piston engines our rotaries fire two times for every crank revolution... multiply your RPM's by 2 and you get an 18,000RPM equivalent redline. Standard piston motor coils were never designed for these duty cycles. Coils such as the "LS Truck" coils do have a decent power output for their size (though still a 10a vs 25a potential coil), but once the duty cycles nearly triple their spark intensity drastically drops off... they simply can not recharge fast enough in the given amount of time available with a rotary firing twice as often. Translation: While a decent candidate for piston motors their claimed "high power" output is not relevant with the short recharge times of a rotary. The IGN-1A has been proven for years in the FD community to be the rotary coil of choice and there has yet to be a relevant contender. Originally built for two-stroke high output marine racing engines, the IGN-1A was designed from the ground up specifically for it's ability to recharge fully at double or triple the duty cycle of normal 4 stroke motors. Weighing in at nearly 1lb each these massive coils can charge extraordinarily fast and output an immensely powerful spark with long duration at any RPM. Built to endure whatever you ask of them and last for the life of your car.

Mil-Spec Wiring Harness:
The stock wiring is absolutely insufficient to supply power to aftermarket coils, and I'm on the fence about their ability to effectively supply power to the stock coils. The wiring is made up of 20ga wire... and long runs. This is unreasonably thin! Trying to pull the amperage draw for LS coils (10A potential) let alone the IGN-1A (25A potential) is absurd, and let's not talk about the cheap Mazda wire insulator breaking down and cracking around these wires in the hot rotary engine bay. Most of the cars we've seen have cracked wires that are oxidized internally... it's really bad and we don't feel these have any other use than simply as signal wires. Ignition systems require very clean power and ground sources... and we have addressed this with our standalone wiring harness that pulls direct power from the battery through a thick gauge power wire, and employs a sealed 40A relay, sealed weatherpack fuse, high temp mil-spec wire, wrapped in a silicone covered fire sleeve. The stock connectors are used only to supply signal to the harness, all power and grounds are done through the standalone harness. We also have a direct block ground to provide a direct path for spark discharge back to the battery, as well as a direct battery ground (one of the many reasons customers report their cars running better and smoother after this coil install... we clean up the electrical system and stray voltage with this setup). This provides a clean and direct path back to the battery for stray voltage, which will clean up sensitive sensor readings through the engine bay, preventing your ECU from reading noise on top of the sensor signals.

Coil Mount:
Our plug and play mount replaces the stock coils with the IGN-1A coils... seamless install in a factory location. It's powder-coated black and comes with black anodized aluminum coil spacers and stainless steel hardware.

Plug Wires:
SakeBomb plug wires with positive lock ends and silicone boots, finish off the kit - available in red or black. We only use MSD Supercore wire for the lowest resistance wire we've been able to find with the best EMF resistance money can buy. It's double silicone insulator protects the wire from abrasion with a softer outer layer and a more rigid inner layer. These are some of the lowest resistance wires we've used and they last essentially indefinitely. Years ago when we put our first FD set together we tested the resistance and wrote it down... the wires were around 95 ohms. 7 years of abuse later they read 102 ohms. Go test your current spark plug wires and compare, you'll be absolutely appalled.

Bump, we've got a new set of brackets coming in, as we've sold out the last two runs of 20 pieces. There are now 40 kits out there on RX8's. We've had hugely positive feedback from our customers and are finishing our next batch. Probably a dumb question, but can the dwell timing on these be easily adjusted in aftermarket ECU?

 

yes. Adaptronic, Cobb, mazdaedit have adjustable dwell. Great coils. You guys should def. get in on a group buy
