I finally was told, after 4 years of having to have the engine de-flooded at the Mazda place that (1) you need to warm them up a couple of minutes before driving and (2) to put it in park, run the RPMs up near 5 and then turn the key off every time you turn the car off. He said this gets the gas out of the engine and cuts off the flow of the gas to the engine. Every time I had that problem, I had started up and moved the car and cut it off again - like backing out of the driveway to let someone out, or just moving the car a few feet. This seems to be common knowledge among RX8 owners, but I sure didn't know. Have had the car 4 years, and was just told this.

While it won't hurt, a healthy car does not need this. If you're flooding often you need to check the state of your ignition components or replace preventatively.

To the original poster: how's your battery? Sounds like it's discharged. What happens when you try to start? Any unusual sounds?

Check your starter's fuse, your starter, your battery, your leads, your connections on your battery, check to make sure all of the nuts are tight and free of any rust or tarnishing on anything connected to electricity.

That's wrong. Long warmup is not really good for any car. A 5k rev before shutting down is a myth. Don't pay attention to whoever fed you that stuff.

What is true is that you should not turn it off before it's fully warmed up - temperature gauge up to its normal position. If the engine and ignition are in good shape you can get away with cold shut-downs, but IMHO it's prudent to wait until it's warm. There's a Quick Tips manual that should have come with your car, or can be downloaded from Mazda's web site, that describes the "Short Trip Procedure" like just moving a few feet to let someone out.
