going to canada, cheaper to buy parts there?

I am not sure which section this would go to. I wanna see the views of americans and canadians on conversion of rates and taxes. I am going to toronto this summer and was wondering if it is cheaper to buy parts in canada than the US since we have a different dollar rate. Also, would it be better to ship it over, would there be extra import taxes or just drive it back in a van (border control?? extra taxes??). Thanks for all your replies. O yea, wanted to buy a MS spoiler and front there.

I'd be willing to bet that any after-market pieces for the 8 would still be cheaper in the U.S. When parts are marketed here, they are always more expensive than in the U.S. For my other cars, I order my parts from Autozone and have them shipped here. Always at least 35% cheaper than best price here. I can check prices for you up here and e-mail you them.

Nope, not true. The price lists for Mazda OEM accessories are NOT straight exchange-rate conversions, they vary greatly part by part and there are quite a few that are cheaper in Canada. You have to get the calculator out and compare US prices from someplace like Trussville or Rosenthal (see the forum's Vendor Section) to your Canadian dealer prices for each part to see where it's cheaper. For example, the RX-8 side strakes are waaay overpriced in Canada, but the splash guards are cheaper here than the US. Another example - Mazda brake rotors for a 96 Miata are cheaper from a Mazda Canada dealer than the discounted Trussville dealer prices!

Gordon

Come on, don't be so lazy! Look up the price on their web site, look up the Mazda Canada web site for the MSRP Canada price, and get out your calculator!

(Yes, the side strakes are significantly cheaper in the US than Canada. However, you will have to pay shipping and brokerage to import them, so it's best to have a few items to order at once)

Gordon
