UK S1 RX-8 Immobilizer Issue?

Hi guys,

I'm a new member, however I have been reading the forum for while as a guest.

I have searched the forum for other issues similar to mine, however, none are exactly the same as the issue I am experiencing.

I have an 06 RX-8 that seems to have suddenly contracted an electrical problem. I parked it last night after a drive and all seemed fine. The next morning I go out and push the unlock button on my key and noticed the sidelights didn't blink to tell me it was unlocked.

I sat in the car and closed the door, put the key in the ignition and turned it to 'ON'. From here, the Immobilizer light flashes very fast, and I can hear clicking from the engine bay fuse box. None of the centre console is working, the headlights, dipped lights, or brake lights are not working.

If I try and use any other source of power, e.g push the brake pedal to activate the brake lights (which aren't lighting anyway) , I can see the dash dim even lower.

The needles seem to fly around everywhere!

When I activate the lock button on the key, the door locks lock, but when I try and unlock button on the key, the locks only move a couple of mm or so. I can hear maybe a sound of a relay in each side of the car in the doors.

There is also a loud 'buzz' that you can hear in the video occasionally when I push 'Lock' on the key. This noise is coming from the drivers side, just by my right foot. Which is where the alarm/immobilizer is right?

I have visually checked the fuses and think they are okay. The relays clicking is a good sign they are working right?

Could this really be, just a dead battery miraculously overnight? a dead key battery? Or something more serious?

I have uploaded a video so you can get an exact idea as to what is happening.

I only turn the key to 'ON' and not 'START', nothing happens if I turn to start of course.

Link to video.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not able to check the battery at the moment. The heavens have opened outside, and I'd rather not get too wet.

I'll try later on if it stops raining.

Thanks,

Matt

I have just had the battery tested, and it seems okay!

Could the battery in the key be causing issues if it's running flat?
