Mazdaedit vs Cobb ... which is best .

I keep getting asked which is better Mazdaedit or Cobb ? This is an unbiased attempt to explain the advantages of each option.

Madzaedit advantages :

*Ability to tune multiple vehicles without needing to buy more software(if they physically can come to you) - pro version only
*Ability to tune all Mazda performance vehicles - pro version only
*Constant Updates to software to include latest vehicles - but this does come at a price (after the first year) if you want this service.
*Ability to find and name new maps previously undiscovered - access to all maps -Pro version only
*Superior logging and log viewing capabilities - much better and easier to use
*Virtual Dyno built in is kinda sexy
*Slightly cheaper - personal version only . Pro version is dearer.
*If you live outside of North america .... ME still works if you want to self tune . With Cobb you are forced to use MM
*Works on S2 rx8s - Cobb doesn't
*Continued support

Cobb advantages :

*if you leave it mounted in vehicle you get a permanent gauge of your choosing
*Easier/quicker to get set up and ready to tune
*You don't need a laptop like you do with M/E
*No worries with what happens if your laptop dies .

Hope that helps
Have i forgotten anything ?

I think that is a dead heat : either way there is potential for bricking your ECU but I've only ever heard of this happening when something is done wrong during flashing.. EG , battery dies , cable is unplugged , an attempt is made to start the car , ignition is turned off ETC.

both the ones mentioned are Flash Based tuning of the stock ECU.
I don't think the comparison as which is best of all tuning solutions. Plus Brett has experience with these two in detail. I don't think he has much with the Adaptronics.

Which would be the easier route to masking a CEL for emissions purposes? Currently running a header back set up and took out the air pump. I'll need to mask the air pump and o2 sensor codes. I know you can do it from a COBB, but if mazdaedit is slightly cheaper that may be my way to go. I have til August, just trying to think ahead.

I think it just masks the light on the dash. if you pull up codes through the OBD port it will still be there. correct me if I'm wrong here anyone

Yes . Don't have any experience with Adaptronics .
But this was really a thread to compare the two flash based options ... not to compare ALL tuning solutions. Flash based vs standalone could be another thread ...

Flash based tuning is your cheapest and most effective option. Since the Adaptronic Select is essentially a standalone ECU (it only retains the factory ECU for non-engine control), it is priced accordingly at $1,600+, and will likely fail any OBD2 based testing.

No, there are two tables to adjust to get both I believe. One turns off the light, one blocks the CEL completely. There have been a few threads where people have turned off the light, but then failed OBD2 emissions because the code was still there. They were able to go back in and block the CEL code completely, and pass OBD2 emissions.

^^I was pretty sure you could block it completely if you did it correctly. The info out there on the Mazdaedit is just a lot less as all of the new kids on the block make threads asking about the COBB.

Is there more features than the other ? Like different maps that can be altered or anything or they both can adjust the same parameters?

So it has more maps that can 'be adjusted than the. Current cobb? Or does the Cobb have all available and mazdaedit is being opened up to there availability? Is what I meant

I'll go with MEP is a supported product. ATR hasn't had an update (for us) in years. I got two mep updates in the past 12 months and have access to more maps than I did in ATR.

That doesn't mean you can't tune with Cobb. It just means don't expect any support from them or to address any enhancement requests.

So just for spoon feeding;
- If you are outside US and want to convert to turbo setup, you need MazdaEdit, right? My ATR(Cobb) I cannot find and adjust Volumetric efficiency as far as I can see.

Regarding laptop death, no problem if you store things at Dropbox or similar? Or are you in deep anyway with MazdaEdit?

Great info by the way.

There is a VE table you can edit with the cob... so I'm not sure what you're saying. I'm in the USA though, but I can't imagine that the tables are all that different in the non USDM models.
