Buying car from dealer, out of state ?'s

Hey guys, I have a NC license and residency there, however I am currently down in FL visiting family, and trying to purchase a car. I found a really nice 8 here from a dealer, and i have a few questions.

The dealer told me that I can pay sales tax either here in FL, or when i go to NC to register the car.

My question is, they told me if i didnt pay sales tax in FL, that they could not issue a temporary tag for me. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? It doesn't sound right but i'm not sure. I also dont want to be stuck paying taxes here in FL just to get a plate, then again when i register it in NC.

You will pay sales tax to the state you register it in. So if you are going back to nc soon pay tax there. If you are staying in fl I'd get an fl license and pay tax to fl with an established fl residence.

Temp tag will work fine if you are going back to nc soon

Yeah, I'm aware that I pay the sales tax in the state I register it in. Considering NC is cheaper tax wise, that is where I want to do it at. However, according to this dealer i can only get a temp tag if i pay sales tax here in FL.

He told me if i pay tax on it in FL they will give me a bill of sale saying tax was paid here so I wont get hit with it up in NC...Idk what to believe.

Call the Florida DMV and ask them.

Tyblat, I live in MD and just bought a '11 RX-8 from a Mazda dealer in NC. You would pay the NC vehicle sales tax since you're a resident there. Sounds like the dealer in FL was saying that they can take care of the transaction for you. It won't cost you any more to have them do it. That's how the transaction went for me. Hope that helps.

Yeah, that makes sense. I just want to make sure i am paying the NC tax here and not the FL tax. (NC tax is way cheaper)
