I test drove a 2009 Sport with 17,000 miles, then got out of that and hopped into a 2009 R3 with 27,000 miles for a repeat of the same test drive. Both were still on original rubber, and I couldn't detect any mods to either. It was remarkable how much better the R3 felt. Not in a jaw dropping way, but each item that makes the 8 good, is just slightly better with the R3, and the end result is better than the sum of the improvements.

If I then added the weight of the moonroof and heated leather seats to the Sport (the major changes up to a GT), I expect the difference would be greater still.

So it depends on why you would buy it. If you were buying it for more of a grand tourer, then the GT will be better, and you won't miss the R3 improvements. But as a toy, the R3 is the way to go.

Hey the newer R3 is the right choice. However if you find a really good deal on a 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 ( with low mileage and good compression numbers) that is a good option. The 2008 40th Anniversary Edition was the test bed for the 2009 R3 and has similar suspension upgrade such as a tighter tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks and foam-filled cross-members. And its wheels were the first use of the design that would be followed for the R3 wheels and all series 2 models. 40th Edition still gives you the more comfortable leather seats (the recaros of the R3 can be a little tight fitting unless you are normal sized). The 40th Anniversary Edition can also come with the preferred factory rear wing and aero package (some did, some didn't). Mine has all the aero goodies. Only 1000 2008 40th Anniversary Editions were made for the US market, so it is even more exclusive than the total of the R3 models.

Just a thought, some prefer the newer Series 2 look, its one gallon larger gas tank, different ratio gear box, extra engine oil metering, the R3s 19 inch wheels and upgraded suspension, and upgraded interior goodies.
