compression test numbers?
My daughter has a 2004 RX-8 and it is having issues at idle and the car has died at stop lights a couple of times. The local dealership ran test and said the only way to guarantee the problem would go away is to replace the engine or if we could run octane boost and it would most likely take care of the idle issue. I don't understand how he could recommend a new engine then say octane boost could help.
Here are the numbers from the compression test. Could you please give me your opinion on the results? Thanks.
R#1
5.8, 6.0, 6.2 @250rpm
R#2
6.7, 6.6, 6.7 @250rpm
specs > 6.8 @250rpm

Thanks for the quick responses, I figured R1 would be a problem and could maybe get away with R2 readings. The dealer gave me a quote of a little over $4100 to replace the motor and I really don't think I want to invest that much more into the car. I think I will just put the $4100 into buying her another car.

The dealer's comment about octane booster is just showing his ignorance. Doesn't change the test results though.
You can get the engine replaced or rebuilt for $2,000-$3,000 depending on where you go.
Before you throw in the towel though, make sure that you are indeed outside the 8yr 100,000 mile warranty on the engine. Most 2004s are, but a few late sold ones aren't.
