Okay only place I can post this.
I have searched these forums and other forums as well but no luck.

I bought a rx8 off an auction*risky* i know but worth it.
Now the weird part is that it tends to smoke from the exhaust. Blue smoke to be exact. Not a lot of smoke on idle, sometimes its barley noticeable but other times you can see it clearly. Light blue smoke.
When I rev it a little and let off the throttle and the rpms settle to around 1-2k a cloud of blue smoke comes out and then it settles down. Did i mention this only happens randomly?
I read it could be burning oil but this dude was smoking badly and had stock exhaust.
I have a HKS Hi-power single outlet with *what i can tell* has not cat but some mid pipe but it is also not throwing any codes. I haven't driven the car for about 2 weeks but it was turned on every other day, warmed up for about 30 mins and turned off.

Any more details needed to why it smokes randomly?

question #1: does the exhaust smell bad? like unburnt oil/fuel/toxic fumes you probably shouldnt be breathing? if so you have no catalytic

 

Compression test, looks like your moving on up to the 2nd engine club

 

This is what i know...

If you are seeing Blue Smoke From Your Exhaust this means that your car engine is burning oil. It really does not smell very good and is not good for your health to breath in. This smoke should not be confused with White Smoke you will see when a car first starts up. That White Smoke is just water vapor(Steam) that has collected while the car was parked and will go away as the car engine warms up.

 

It smells ******* terrible but that could be cause of no cat. Sorry for foul language. I hope its not time for new engine. If I use thicker oil would ot resolve the issue?
Oh i forgot to mention. The people at the auction, being clueless idiots, turned the car off while cold which flooded it. Could flooding it cause this? I did the deflooding procedure and got lots and lots of smoke. Sorry for all questions. Just wanna rule everything out before i say **** it and rebuild the engine.

 

Give us more info about the car...year, mileage, engine mods (if any), etc...

 

Here we go,
Engine Mods;

• AEM cold air intake
• Battery relocated to back
• A/C Removed
• New headers.. (jk)

Mods:

• HKS-Hi power exhaust, single outlet
• Mid-pipe(catless)

Car info

• 89k miles
• 2004
• New tranny and all goodies at 79k
  
• 5-20w oil last change was sometime last year at 88k miles done by University Mazda here in Seattle
  
• was flooded once and that was recent
  
• Has a slow start(same rate hot and cold)
  
• No power loss noticed when I did drive it. Actually a lot faster than other rx8's i've driven
• I saw white residue on dip stick
• Oil on MAF?
  
• Cabin and behind the exhaust when car is running smells awful
• The rear of the car has been sitting on jack stands so she is slightly slanted
• There is chunky black build up in the exhaust
  

I am thinking of using thicker oil? 5-30w
Also, she will be driven by the end of next week so should I ride her hard to get all the possible build up? and hopefully make it stop smoking.
I turned her on today and no smoke...

A little up date:
I drove her a little bit last night around the neighborhood and at first she smoked a little bit and then i said **** it, i ran her so hard the neighbors actually called police on me for disturbing the peace and they drive a Harley at 2 am ... anyways after I ran her hard the smoke was minimal to none. Ill run her a little bit today after I get off work and give an update.

I see you are catless, try putting the stock catalytic converter back, and maybe the blue smoke will disappear...

 

oil usually pools up in the exhaust after a flooding issue, it takes some time to burn off.

my 8 burned a small hole in the ozone when i deflooded it, i did some donuts and slid around a few corners and it was all good from there.

i also run 10W-30 year round in it but having a cat does eliminate some oil burning smoke from showing up.

I looked inside the exhaust and it was black, pure black and oily. After a fun time drifting and taking hard corners. Left the car sit over night turned it on today and voila! no smoke. :D
Exhaust is now a dark gray color inside and dry.

Thanks for the help as well on the other post and this one! I will do an oil change asap and start using thicker oil.
