Glasspack anyone?

Sooooo I have this idea to glasspack and muffler delete my exhaust. Anyone know anything about how this will work on an rx8? and it's between a 9-12inch glasspack resonator tube BEHIND the cat and the stock resonator, then a single pipe continuing, splitting into two and slightly larger tips to finish it off. Let me know how you feel about this idea PLEASE no flaming on here just lemme know what you think.

Oh and i plan on it being all stainless steel, i've heard anything less doesn't hold its welding very well or for very long.

Thanks for the input!!

The packing will be lucky to last 100 miles.

yeah i've been reading about them melting from the high rpm. any difference if its a stainless steel resonator?

are there any cons to it melting besides it getting louder, and how much louder would it be?

and one morrrrrre thing, what if i installed TWO lengths of the glasspack tubing and THEN then the piping behind that.

Yup! Drove the 685 miles from MI to DGRR in 12 clock hours on Thursday, back in 12 hours on Sunday. 1730 miles in total including mountain hooning.

Stainless is used because thin mild steel cracks and corrodes quickly. Even with the glass in, that setup will be brutally loud. If you're short of cash, keep an eye on the used parts listings and find a proven setup. Messing with glasspacks is a proven fail; why waste your money?

Only 685? That's about the same mileage I had between home and paradise.

Was great meeting you!

Guess I better get on topic. I had glass packs on a beaten up dodge minivan I owned briefly back in the day. I would build up back pressure on the highway and let it rip. The resulting explosion always cleared the queue of cars around me.

Doubt it would stay intact in our car. You're looking at 1800F temps under load post header.

Perhaps this will help:

Stock midpipe + catback = quiet
BB resonated midpipe + stock catback = mild tone
BHR resonated midpipe + stock catback = mild tone
TXS resonated midpipe + stock catback = loud tone

Full Borla Exhaust = mild tone
Full TXS Exhaust = loud tone (bordering obnoxious)
Full GReddy Exhaust = loud tone (bordering obnoxious -- just ask Jesse)

BHR resonated midpipe + TXS catback = medium tone

glasspack in any combination = fail

Sounds like you should start with a decent resonated midpipe.

I haven't seen too many NA Renesis engines run much near 1700F or higher

I've also been running the pack-less Moroso stainless steel spiral-flow muffler in the midpipe resonator position without issue despite claims that it will fall apart internally

this is the 3" version that I race with:

Moroso 94055 Moroso Spiral Flow Mufflers

they make a 2.5" as well

Moroso 94054 Moroso Spiral Flow Mufflers

you will still need a rear muffler for respectable street use

The exhaust gets way too hot and will burn up a glass pac in short order. Xero Ryuu has it right" Buy right or buy twice" I would add to that "At least twice". Glass pac is a bad idea, a waste of good money. Best advice.....REASEARCH my friend.

Well it's getting done tomorrow. Based on what I've been reading and what I've heard on here I think it's going to still be one glass pack in the midpipe WITH the expectation of it melting the glass and becoming a steel resonator, but adding in a smaller less restrictive muffler on the back. if it's still too loud i can always upgrade the muffler

i used 2 glass packs as resonators on my P port engine, they lasted 5 laps before they were blown, and after 2 track days they are sagging

you will have better luck the further back you put it, but just don't expect it to last forever

Hi,
I have a lot of experience with exhaust systems dating back to the 70's.
One thing I think you are not considering is a glasspack that melts the packing is no longer a glasspack, but just a heavy-a** section of straight pipe at best, or at worst, an amplifier.
IMO anyway.
I could be wrong.
Wouldn't bet on it.
My concsience is clear now.

i think exhaust v2.1 is going to remove the glasspacks, and just use straight pipes, at worst its going to be the same volume, at best it'll be quieter

@scubast00: Please post the results and after say a few thousand miles because your real life experience is probably worth more than some of the iffy data I have seen here(Not on this post).

I had thought about the glass pac as a cheap replacement. I used glass pac all through the 60"s but the heat scared me away with the high temps of the 8 engine. I am really interested in how it sounds and how longthe material in the glass pac lasts. I say that because we some times follow a point of view with out investigating or experimenting. I'm involved in the never ending story of syn vs dino oil and I am doing what you are doing, I am using syn oil and will prove some thing to me.
Thx.

Well, you could always put the glass packs out of the way of the exhaust stream. They wouldn't see the high temps then, and should last a long time.

I'd recommend picking somewhere in the cabin, maybe the rear window shelf? That should be safe from getting stepped on too.

Okay so what I did was actually not use the glasspacks, I felt like I had a 50/50 chance of them working or not and I didn't feel like spending that extra money if it was the wrong end of 50. It now has a much smaller Flowmaster exhaust, still dual piped and it sounds sexy.

Should I reset my ecu now? I haven't had a chance to really open the throttle wide just yet, but it does seem as if the engine is delivering the power differently than before, just not sure quite how yet, I need to drive it more to figure it out

You should not need to reset the ecu. There isn't likely that much difference that it will show up. Any small variations will be corrected for.
