Should I upgrade?
Should I upgrade?
Alright so I am paying my RX-8 off this month, I have been saving up the money for one huge final payment. Stupid me has started looking online at other cars because apparently I don't like living without a car payment.
My 2006 RX8
Velocity Red
70,000 Miles
Owe $11,300

Found 2009 RX8
Black Mica
57,000 Miles
Asking $13,500

Pending a compression test, I could probably talk them down a little because I will probably find something that may not be up to snuff (I have fixed so many things on my car I know what to look for). With that I could buy the new car outright and sell my old one privately on my own time and still be living without a car payment, or have a minor loan.
Pros are I get the updated model with less miles and I am really extending my warrantee. I currently do not have complete service records on my car so if this new one did that is a bonus. I also would love a new color, and I love black.
The only con feels like I am risking buying another rotary engine that could be ready to go because I dont know how the previous owner treated the car.
Talk me into it or talk me out of it!

I have 13k ready, I am ready to ask 12k in cash and expect to land around 12.5k. Realistically it has to be perfect before with service records before I am ready to get a compression test. Now I wont be able to sleep tonight!
I could pay off my S1 completely, if I got the S2 I would either come out even or I would have a small loan I could pay off quickly. So I don't technically has 12k to use on my S1 as of now.
You know, if it were me, I'd keep my S1. Years from now, everyone will look at that first version as the (much) better looking car, IMO.
Why not just take whatever money you would need for that S2 and put it aside for a new engine, should you ever need one. You might find not having a monthly car payment surprisingly refreshing.

+1
Car ran fine, but the dealer does not have complete service records with the car. They are going to get in contact with the service center Monday to look up the VIN and they say if it looks like its received its scheduled maintenance they may be able to write something up to honor the engine warranty, granted I continue the maintenance. They even said they would run a compression test on their dime down at their Mazda dealership just to ensure the engine is good.
We will see on Monday I guess. I really don't see that happening so I think I will just be paying off my S1 loan and live without the payments!

I think the SI looks a hell of a lot better than the SII. Agreed, you have low miles, but you know your maintenance on your car - they don't yet (that is risky, especially with these rotary engines).
Honestly, keep your SI if you want a color change do it yourself! It is an awesome thing called Plasti Dip (dipyourcar.com). Why try to HOPEFULLY get what you want for your car (which probably wont happen) and then try to talk down another "newer" car for the same price?
