New member Intro and Questions
Greetings Fellow Canadians!!
I've been reading posts all over the entire site, along with watching about half a million YouTube videos on the RX-8. I was told about the Wankel some time ago by my late father had over the years he told me a lot of stories about them. When I got my first car after high school (New Yorker) we had been thinking about getting a RX-7 . Dad was normally a big fan of "American Muscle" from Detroit but for some reason the Wankel and RX-7 always got him going. When the RX-8 came out, we had a test drive and both fell in love with it, dad wanted one but could not afford it. He recently passed and I am trying to complete as many of his dreams and projects as I can in his honour.
I've already got my huge SUV for the winter, and the wife has convinced me to "downsize" our summer car (Chrysler 300) to something she can drive. After a longer discussion, agreed that I should have my own car so she can take the baby with her when needed.
I have the chance get two of these cars and would like the opinion of this expert community on which you think would be the better car. I will post direct from the add. I have also made contact with both sellers and asked all the questions one should ask when buying a used car along with all the questions about buying an RX-8
Common Facts, both cars are silver, GT and Automatic.
Car A: "2004 Mazda Rx8 automatic equipped with paddle shifters and trip tronic shifting, fully loaded power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, premium stereo, traction and stability control, factory hid headlights, steering wheel controls, car has 4 bucket seats and console from front to rear, car is in like new condition only 60000kms and it shows. car needs nothing at all"
Car B: "Selling my 2006 Mazda RX-8
It's in great shape, only ever been driven in summer months
Has been regularly maintained and serviced. 130,000KM"
It should be noted that the 2006 needs new tires for inspection and has a sunroof, the 2004 does not.
as for price, i can get the 2006 for around $7500 + or - , the 2004 is asking $8000 but told me to make him an offer

I would definitely go for the 2006, since they're both auto the 2004 would have the 4-port engine which is notorious for failing early. Since its out of warranty I wouldn't risk it.
Plus needing new tires might be a good time to put some nice ones on it.
Either way make sure you get a compression test done.

Well it's nice that your trying to fufill some of your fathers dreams.(sorry for your loss)
If your looking for low maintance and low gas mileage this is not the right car, mileage is about the same as your 300.
The 06 will still have some warranty left on so that's a good thing. But like others will state, have a compression test done to the car before purchase, you will thank us.
As for tires,(it is what it is)just get something that will suit your driving condition all seasons are not always the best choice for this car.
Good luck with your purchase and please post some pics of your new to you RX8 if you get one

Welcome to the club (almost) and sorry for your loss as well.
At this point, it sounds like you've done enough research to know the Pro's and Con's of these cars, so, I'll leave that alone.
I see the "NS" flag on this post. Where in Nova Scotia are you located? Might be able to help you out with looking things over and directing you to the best local sources for things. (If any.)
Generally I would say 2006 over 2004 in an Auto, as there is a significant difference in the engine.
Are they both private sales, or any dealerships involved?
One caution I would give, since this is Nova Scotia, look out for rust. Winter driven RX8s seem to have the same issue as winter driven 3's in the rear quarter panels and underneath. Check that over carefully.
I also wouldn't worry too much about tires. Gives you the opportunity to put on what you want anyway, and means you aren't paying a premium for something you might end up wanting to replace anyway. (But then, I'm a bit picky about tires.)

Thanks for all the messages, and after a little more looking I can see why the 06 would be the better car. I looked over the emails from the sellers to give you more information.
NS is hellish in the winter and neither of them has been winter driven. The owner of the 2004 gave me a lot of information and knows a lot about the care its self, he is also going to have a compression test done. The owner of the 2006 does not know if its ever been done and he had it for 3 years.
I am waiting on them to get the VIN numbers so I can check the tax rate on them and also run a car proof report (security reasons).
Both cars are in the Halifax area and only 1 is legally drive able. The 2004 is ready to go but the 2006 would have be be towed/hauled. keep in mind, i am trying to get the best possible deal.

I'm not trying to knock anyone driving preference but is it a must that its an auto? You'll probably have a lot more choices if you got a manual.
Why would it need to be towed? I'm not sure how things work in NS but here you can get a temp plate then deal with the safety later.

The VIN is so i can give it to the local DMV and they can tell me how much tax i need to pay. They said they will go by the red book value or the sale price, which ever is more. So i might pay $7500 for the car, but if they value it at $10,000 it means I have to pay taxes on higher amount. would you want a $$1125 tax bill or a $1500 tax bill? I know we all hate taxes and i dont't want any surprises. I was going to get a Crossfire for $7000 but they had its "tax" rate set at $15,000
As for the 2006 not being drive able, i am sure it "could be" but it means more waiting in line at the DMV and its a long enough drive to Sackville/halifax as it is.

Interesting about them looking up the payable taxes on the VIN ahead of time. I'd always just thought they used book value for that year and mileage. Mind you, I've only ever bought one vehicle that they didn't just go with the documentation I provided.

Ok everyone, I finally got the VIN numbers from the owners and checked the taxes. but today is Friday and I can't check on them tomorrow. As part of my due diligence, I can a car proof on both of them and the 2004 came up clean but the 06 came up with some damage.... I am going to read the reports and let you know what its all about............................
Well..... check this out...

Maybe its just me....but this tells me that I would not be interested in the 2006.
The most concerning is the 'first center' collision @ $4760.
I'm sure there are many other RX-8 out there. Clearly the owner of the 2006 did not give a damn about the car and treated it like a civic/corolla. lolz
