I have a question about buying an extended warranty.

I know if you buy a Rx8 from a mazda dealership, your offered or can ask about an extended warranty, that much i understand. But what if you buy it from a non-mazda dealership?
Can you bring your rx8 to a local mazda dealership and purchase an extended warranty from them?

 

In a word, no. If you buy it from a Mazda Dealership you can purchase a warranty through the dealership, but if you purchase the vehicle from say a Ford Dealership, you will have to purchase the warranty at the time of purchase. When/if you have a problem with the vehicle most of the time you will be obligated to take it back to the purchasing dealership for warranty work. If the Dealership determines they are unable to repair it, they will get it to an appropriate shop. However in cases where you may not be able to get there such as you are out of town, you can take it to any dealership/garage that will accept your warranty.

On a side note you can purchase a warranty on the open market. Your car will have to meet certain criteria to qualify, such as be not too old or be under a certain mileage. Do your research on these companies before you purchase. Some are ok and some just take your premium and leave you high and dry, by finding any and every reason to deny your warranty claim. Actually you can purchase one from the dealership. It may not be a Mazda extended warranty you would have to go to your local dealer and speak to the Finance manager and your vehicle will need to be inspected. Usually if it's within the factory warranty you should be fine but if it is over 70k miles your options may be limited. And as the previous post states there are companies that come and ago so be careful you could buy a warranty now and two years later the company doesn't exist anymore. Seen it happen many times

So when issues arrive with the car or anything, I bring it to a local dealership in my area correct?

 

A CPO vehicle should already have a Mazda backed extended warranty that is good at any Mazda dealer.

If you buy a car outside of California regardless of the year you need to have it smogged and possibly need to make some changes to pass California emissions. If you can and you want save yourself the headache purchase a California car and you won't have to worry about the smog.

 

I understand. The only problem is that there is practically no Mazda dealerships that have an R3 for sale. Especially one that's CPO.

There is one in San Jose which I mentioned in my other thread but it's overpriced, it has 2 scratches and it doesn't come with the R3 rims despite having no previous owners. (Certified Used 2011 Mazda RX-8 For Sale in the Dallas CA Area | VIN: JM1FE1T47B0404898)

This R3 located in Washington was actually sold in California but resold in washington. So unless the previous owner did something, chances are can successfully pass smog since it was sold in california. Right?

There is a owner in the next city that is selling his 2009 R3 but I don't have all the cash available but he's not open to discussion. Since he wants cash only unless I can get a loan from my bank.

 

FWIW - I bought my R3 from a Mercedes dealership, it still had 1 month left on its factory warranty.

I went to my local Mazda dealership and purchased a non-mazda extended warranty from the finance department, I have a "platinum warranty" that is bumper to bumper $50 deductible and lasts for 5 years and 60K miles. It is also transferable.

I paid $2500 +/- I cannot remember the exact amount.

2009 R3 with 16K miles on it, sold originally in October 2009. I purchased in September 2012.

 

you gotta be patient or look private party or if can you justify spending the extra money to have the car smogged, DMV will have to inspect it plus you will have to pay dmv for all the sales tax and registration fees as well plus any other modification the car may need to be california legal. It's more of a hassle to buy out of state and bring to california unless you are military

 

This one should be no problem. Even if it wasn't California compliant, it has the required mileage to register it in California providing the Federal standards are still met.

 

yea as long as the emissions components weren't tampered with you should be good

 

Thanks for the help guys. Though I'm leaning towards the 2011 VR R3 because its newer but we'll see. I go to my local dmv and ask what are the fees to registering the car and see if its worth buying out of state.

 

I'm about to buy a 2010 RX8 with 23,000 miles on it from CarMax. Is their extended warranty worth it? The car still has 77K miles and 4 years from Mazda. I read it's transferable. Does anything have to be done to transfer the warranty or is that automatic/implied?

Warranty automatically transfers. I wouldn't bother paying for the Carmax warranty to be honest.

I started the transfer from Nashville, TN to FL's Carmax today. $349 but it was hard to find a newer year model with low miles. They only had a single 2010 in the entire country. They told me its rare to get these RX8s. They told me most people keep them.

 

Well, while I wouldn't put much faith in what Carmax tells you about them, in this case they are generally correct. It was more because the 2010s - 2011s were only selling at like 100-150 a month. The ratio to Series1 RX-8s in volume is a substantial gap.

I just took a look to see what all RX-8s were listed around the country, and I didn't see any 2010s. Probably already pulled your listing off.

 

Yeah they already pulled the listing. I started the transfer today around noon EST.

They did tell me it was a previously leased vehicle. I hope that means the owner was required to keep it in good shape. He said that likely means it was forced into getting maint. done.
