I would have said rev it up and let out the clutch, but I'm not sure what the best way to go about a launch w/ the AT would be... There's all sorts of stuff on the forum about ECU upgrades, turbo, superchargers, 3-rotor's. It all depends on how much $$$ you're willing to spend.

yea he pretty much right. nowa days its your wallet that counts more than any thing. well im not too familiar with the rotary yet but i can suggest an exhaust system and a k&n intake filter and i also heard of a stage 1 turbo system im not sure if it is true or not and how much but that is all i got to say.

I was wondering why you chose the AT. I guess if you don't know how to drive manual that would be a good reason. If you were looking for better exceleration you should have opted for the manual. It is like 2 different cars besides the fact the manual does have I believe 30 more ponies.

Sounds like he doesn't know how to drive an automatic either.

Sorry, but that's a great way to blow a transmission, but pretty useless for fast acceleration. Anyway - you should have done some research here before you bought. While the automatics have their strengths, performance isn't one of them. Everybody acknowledges that the auto RX-8 is not very quick off the line, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Regards,
Gordon

The only strength I can think if is the lack of shifting. Is there something else?

Lack of clutching.

Less chance of getting a ticket for "excessive display of acceleration"

Wife can drive it too. (oh wait, that's not really a strength in my book) :D

1) Put your car in drive
2) Apply your brakes
3) Rev your engine till you get wheelspin or the brakes can't hold the car back (3000 RPM - 4000 RPM maybe?)
4) Back off the rev's just a tad
5) Release the brakes

Thats pretty much all you can do...DO NOT throw your car in Neutral then back into Drive unless you aren't moving (it's bad for the tranny).

Trade in the weak AT and get a Manual. Thats the easiest way to get another 40hp.

Want your A/T to suck less, send it here.

My opinion? A/T is the worst automotive invention ever... encourages laziness and inattentiveness to the road and driving environment. Ditch it and get the stick, unless you plan on bracket racing

You can use the "power braking" technique as was described earlier - applying brake and accelerator at the same time bringing up the RPM and "loading" the drivetrain to the point of wheel spin - then quickly lift off the brake and mash the accelerator.

Aftermarket items that would help the situation (aside from increasing engine hp) would be a "high stall" tourque converter and a light flywheel. Both of these would help a great deal when accelerating from a stop but not sure they are available in the aftermarket for the RX-8 A/T.

I have JIC exhaust and K&N intake on my AT and the car is still slow off the line
I am convinced I will need a super charger to get the real HP up

Besides the Brake/Rev thing, you can try using the manual mode on the AT. You can't really get it to go quicker in first, but you can shift to second when you want. (And you can run the revs all the way up to red-line and hear the beep.) But the AT is really not about speed off the line. You gotta just smile and go with it ....

naw im not converting to stick, lol if i wanted a stick i would have gotten one. the extra speed would be nice, but stick just gets on my nerves after awhile.

cant wait for a supercharger or a turbo kit!

Goosing the AT; be careful

Just remember, if you're thinking of pushing the AT, that it is an old design, made for lower-power cars and upgraded for the RX8 to save money. Of course, the car should have a 5 or 6 speed auto that could take more revs (the 7,500 rpm limit is to save the tranny). Ford wouldn't give Mazda the money to do it. If you try to push more power into the tranny than it was designed to take, you may blow it. I noticed a reference to some supplier of upgrade kits. If that is a reputable outfit, you might want to spend some money there before spending a lot on a new stock tranny.
