Whats wrong with my display???

So when i turned my car on, it didnt tell me it was 'MAZDA RX8' today...

-Also, it doesnt show where the HVAC settings on the right side of the display.
-The HVAC controls work, and i can turn on the AC, heat, etc. But the display doesnt show the little person with the air.
-It doesnt show the 'amb' on top of the temperature.
-And the clock is off. The hour digit works(and can be adjusted), but the minute digit is stuck at ':19'.
-The radio does work; i can cycle through FM/AM/CD, but it doesnt show what i am listening to on the display. ie, it doesnt show 'CD 2:12' or 'FM 106.1'
instead, its just blank in the entire middle section of the display.

Anyone heard of anything similar to this occuring? I'm going to try pulling out the unit and checking the connections later. but damn this sucks.

Sounds to me like your faceplate is going.

Yeah, I have; I pulled out the radio a few months ago, but it worked fine after that through a 110 degree summer
Are you suggesting something might not have aligned properly?

no i havent suggested anything yet. i merely asked for information. it helps to know if a given system has been fiddled with previously if asked to help diagnose a problem with said system.

what was the purpose of pulling it out previously?

why do you think the air temp since then is relevant to the display issue? is there a drastic change today that would make it relevant to a problem showing up today?

Before, i pulled out the radio to do this:

http://www.whatsmyip.org/ipodrx8/1.php

It worked beautifully, and it still does. Since the Cd player still works, when i plug in my phone, i still get audio out from my speakers.

-the display just doesnt show any change. doesnt show 'mazda rx8', and all the other malfunctions i mentioned above.

Temperature? Last week it was 100 degrees, and i didnt put a sunshade up. Maybe something melted?

I live in florida and never use a sunshade my car sits outside every weekday and nothing has melted.

I would pull your head unit out and make sure all the connectors are seated correctly and no wires are grounding (live wire connected to earth)

You screwed something up. You could try disconnecting your negative battery terminal to reset everything and see if it is just a glitch but likely something is shorted or you have a broken solder joint somewhere. I never understood that mod, too much of a risk of screwing something up. The factory ipod adapter is only $100.00.

Tried the reset. Nothing.
Man that's heavy, I didnt think anything went wrong because the display was flawless for about four months after I did that mod..

And thanks wright, i'm going to try that this weekend

Anyone know if the part on the unit's motherboard that controls the display is anywhere near the part that controls the CD player?

I would try removing that mod and making sure all the connection from the LCD to the head unit are okay and that nothing is shorted. It could just be the LCD screen itself which you can get separately for pretty cheap from www.partsgroup.com, www.mazmart.com, or www.revvinsevens.com.
