2005 RX8, 95000 miles, original owner. Never had problems with it until now. Noticed an extreme loss of power going up hill, 60 to 75 MPH on freeway, A/C on, 98 degrees ambient temp (not real hot for central Calif.). The water temp gauge was in the same spot as always. A few miles later on back roads, speed 50 MPH, ambient temp 93, A/C off, power started coming back. Mostly normal now as far as I can tell. Should I be concerned?

I called Mazda about Service Bulletin No: 01-014/08 and they seam to know nothing about it, my potential problem, or whether it was a warranty item or not. Does not leave me with the warm fuzzies about the Mazda dealer. I don't see how they will be able to reliably reproduce the symptoms on demand to comply with the service bulletin. Any comments anyone?

 

I had a very similar issue this summer in Dallas, 100-110 degree weather. '05 6-Spd w/ 82k miles. Checked a couple of the coils. 2 of them had some carbon buildup. After replacing those 2, the power issues disappeared. This was appx. 2 months ago.

 

I have never had a coil problem in a Japanese car, but it would be a relatively cheap fix. I'll add this to my list of things to check. Thanks.

 

Same issue like the Vegas heat. About to buy some coils to solve my idling issue and not dying on me no more.

 

On Rockauto.com they have AIRTEX / WELLS coils for $31 each; BECK/ARNLEY coils for $36 ea; STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS coils for $40 ea; and ORIGINAL ENGINE MANAGEMENT for $71 ea. Anyone have any opinon on any of these brands? They also have NGK spark plugs for $17 ea. I think that is the best price I have seen for plugs.

 

I seem to be having the same issue now, i just moved from NH to AZ so the temp definitely jumped. With the AC on power is really weak below 4k rpm but once i turn it off it seems to get better. I don't really think it is coils because i changed them at 40k and i am at 52k right now. Car is a 2004 and idles pretty much perfectly. I am really temped to get a compression test before the warranty goes out.

 

Get plugs from Advance Auto Parts, They had stock replacement coils last week, but as of this writing, they have only 1 coils left in stock, but they usually stock it every 2-3 weeks so just keep an eye on that.
