Sign of tread separation? How bad is this?
Sign of tread separation? How bad is this?
I was futzing with the front end links and as I was putting my tires back on, I noticed the inner edge of one tire appears to have been "carved out". What I'm guessing actually might have happened is the inner edge of the tread is starting to separate from the tire.
I have attached two pictures, and then a third of the outer edge for comparison. How bad does this look? I think this happened after my first autocross session of the year last Sunday. I haven't really noticed any difference in ride quality at this point, but I'll be sensitive to it now.

Well, the unaffected side is tapered; whereas the inner edge is cut. The other tires are tapered on both inner and outer edges. I'm not exactly sure how this would have happened nor if it is of significant concern.
If it happened when you autox'd then I'd say running a higher pressure (as you should be) will keep your sidewalls from flexing enough for those edges to become contact patches with the ground.
Some kind of lathe action with metal inside wheel well.
The culprit should be highly polished, and might even be the inside lip of fender near the front bottom on severe turn and bounce.
The rubber is in excellent condition; no cracky separation action here!
