So, I got a text from my brother not too long ago. Told me I should paint my rims black, said it'd look sick. I assume he was looking at my recent pics of my car on San Felipe rd

The problem: I got chrome plated OEM rims.

1: Can't powdercoat chrome plated rims, obviously..
2: They're "unique" to some/most people because apparently they are rare.

Personally, I'd love to get some black rims with a yellow lip for my car, but I also love these chrome ones, and you can't have 2 of each
SO, right now I'm just curious about some opinions on this. Thx!

 

You will have to sandblast all the chrome off, then prime and paint them. Case closed.

Sell chromies for large bucks, buy nasty black rimz with yellow lip, look like Civic, job done.

 

soo WBs and VRs with color matching lips on black rims look like civics? or you just dont like LY?

I just don't think he likes the lip.

I have been looking at some black rims for my VR 8, but I am not a big fan of having a matching lip. If done with the right rims, it could look sweet, but that doesn't happen very often in my opinion.

 

I wouldn't say they look like Civics, but I don't think it looks good. Typically the people with with black/color lip rims will go on and on about their "theme" or "color scheme" and EVERYTHING has to be black or their car color. But it just ends up looking cheesy in my opinion. Wheels should compliment the color of your car, not match it. The exception would be monochromatic colors: white, silver, gray and black can get away with color matching wheels and look good.

If you want black OEM wheels look into Plasti-Dip. I'm not sure how it would work on chrome, but it is temporary and when you get sick of it you just peel it off.

 

hm. i understand now.. so it just depends on how well its done. and im a perfectionist, so it wont come out like crap. if it does, it stays off my car

and you cant powdercoat these chrome plated rims, it doesnt stick to the surface as well, i just mention them because I like them and would hate to replace them

edit: ahh, you can peel that off? I guess I'll have to look into it, yellow rims here i come!

 

Why don't you look into purchasing a new set? It wouldn't hurt to have 2 sets of rims lying around, and there are usually sets of OEM ones on here for pretty cheap. Pick up a set of those and either get them powdercoated, or look into painting them for yourself.

I am going to plasti-dip my own rims here pretty soon. Just because I want to see how I like black rims, and it is easy to take off if I don't like it.

 

I dont have any space for an extra set of rims lying around, so it I guess it contributes to my confusion of what I should do in the long run..
