Exclamation Manual transmission. Will shift in gear when car is off, but wont shift when on?

I just had the clutch bracket replaced on a 2005 rx8 a week and a half ago. I had driven in about 100 miles since I picked it up from Mazda. Today I was pulling up to a stop sign, I shifted out of first into neutral and came to a complete stop. When I tried to put the car into 1st gear, it really wouldnt let me and I didnt want to force it. I tried putting it into all the gears...same thing. I turned off the car and put it into first gear. When I tried to start the car, it lunged forward and stalled out. I immediately stopped what I was doing. Any help?

Sounds to me like your clutch isn't engaging.

And since you just had it "fixed" at the dealer it leads me to believe that they messed up something or it broke again.

It is possible that your clutch pedal needs a simple adjustment to correct your issue after the work that they did...or it could be that they just didn't tighten down the adjustment enough and it worked itself out of range.

The clutch is not DISengaging. This can be due to a broken pedal bracket assembly ( not uncommon ), or a bad clutch master cylinder. Either repair is quite straightforward.

I would guess they didn't properly bleed the clutch. Or they didn't bench bleed it so when they did bleed it they got pockets of air all in the system. Once you drove it for a short while those pockets were pushed to the end of the line which just happens to be the clutch slave cylinder.

I would check for a fluid leak, then rebleed.

^ The stealership is ripping you off! Call Mazda headquarters and explain about your situation.

Let's start there and see what happens. The only thing you have to lose is the $1400 for parts and labor.

Let us know the outcome if you planned to do this. Good luck.

Mighty strange diagnosis that after THEY replaced a broken clutch pedal.

Reason I noticed your thread - when my engine was dying - they tried to tell me it wasn't my engine needed replacing. Guess what my symptoms were?

Even with the boing boing noise my engine was making, that didn't seem to even register wirth them.....because I came in and said "I can't shift gears when the engine is running" and "my engine sounds very strange!". They got stuck on the 1st part.

I could shift gears OK when the engine was off. Engine on and it was really hard, almost impossible to shift and 6th was out of the question.

Of course Mazda tech can't blow their nose in your car without permission from MNAO tech center. So what did the brainiac MNAO techs demand they do to solve the problem WITHOUT replacing the engine? First - replace the clutch, 2nd - replace the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder. No Go. 3rd. - drop and disassemble and inspect the tail shaft of the transmission. No go. All of this was on my dime ... and STILL the engine sounded funny (duh) and STILL the clutch didn't shift with the engine on????

The local tech got frustrated with MNAO and on his own checked the flywheel runout (yea - out of spec) when the transnission was out - and found the answer - the eccentric shaft was bent and THAT caused ALL the symptoms and I got a new engine. So did I have to pay for all MNAO tech wrong diagnosis attempts, parts and labor - hell ya ~$2,000 outa my pocket.

^ the moral of the story is you are at their mercy. Whether it's a Mazda problem or not they're prob gonna stick you with a bill for something!

welp

i already had the engine replaced back in late august 2010. so hopefully i dont have any issues with that again. with parts and labor, mazdas rates are really high. i was able to get parts for half the price, and found someone who will do the repair for 150 less than mazda

At $150 I sure would have used Mazda to do the work so I could keep my warranty.

I had the same problem shifting into gear when the engine was on a few hundred km's after having Mazda replace the clutch bracket under the recall.
I brought it back into the dealer that did the repair and it turned out my pilot bearing had shattered. The dealer replaced the pilot bearing and it is fine now.
