Better check in the trunk where the S Tech's mount. They bolt inside the trunk right?

I figured so, but had to ask.

Under braking would imply something with the rotors or calipers. Better look at both sides real close.

I have a similar issue. I got my car used with a Borla exhaust on it and when the popping started, I think it's just cause the air-fuel mixture is not combusting completely inside the engine and therefore results in combustion inside the exhaust (dunno if that's what a backfire is). I mean, we've all seen NASCARs with flames out the side-exit exhaust but I know my car can't do that.

I only say that cuz everything in my car is bolted tight as it can be. I have nothing like luggage or the like in my trunk, nothing in the back seat, and only a CD case in the center console where it can fit.

I shift good enough that I can tell it's not a jerking movement made by the car, it just feels, in my mind, to be a popping in the exhaust.

My Focus had a similar problem but only happened on bumps on the road, so totally different thing.

I'd take it to your Mazda dealer instead. They know RX-8s better than anyone else.

At the very least, get a second opinion from the Mazda dealer.
