O4 Sport
143000 miles.
The nut that holds the pinion together backed off.
The plastic in the lock nut seems to have failed because I can tighten the nut by hand.
Somehow it must have over heated.
I ran RedLine oil the last 110000 miles and changed it 2 times.
The oil did not smell that bad and all the bearings are fine, gears are fine.
The car was only tracked 2 times back when it had 10000 miles.

Are you trying to fix it yourself?

Our diffs do get hot so more frequent changes are needed. Not sure if that would have helped that nut or not though. But hey you got your use out of it. check out www.mazmart.com, www.partsgroup.com, or www.revvinsevens.com if you have not found a replacement.

On a Friday I thought I heard something. (Did not use the car over weekend)
On Monday the noise was there, so in my head I started the process of what I will need to do with it (thinking I have some time before complete failure).
On Tuesday the off throttle noise was getting louder.
On Wednesday the off throttle noise was loud. Ok so there’s goes the weekend, and then it proceeded to lock-up on the 5 Fwy in the fast lane. (gota love that)
I got an 06 out of a junk yard, it’s in now with Idemitsu gear oil.

I started this thread mostly to see if any one else has had a similar failure and to show other members whats inside are diffs.

Glad to hear you got things going again. Diff failures are rare here. I suspect the race guys have had more failures though.
