Loss of power while crusing

Ok so i was low on coolant and i added some water. I did add a little too much. But it should drain out on its own..
Now the problem didn't start until after i had added the water into the system.

Car on the hwy on cruise would jitter a little like it was losing power. Then when you go into neutral the rpm just drop to dead unless you keep giving it gas.

Never had this issue before, i know my coils are old and need to replace.

Any ideas lmk

Thanks
Diego

How old are you talking when you say that you know the coils are old?... How many miles are on them?

And are the plugs old too?

Could be clogged... loss of powers seeem to lean towards the cats end.. Usually with plugs/coils youll pull a misfire CEL or a blinking CEL when u hit the "wall"

The Cat in question was removed from a vehicle that had right at 30k miles on it. It was not experiencing any problems, was replaced with the RP Supercat.

I would point to the fact that the coils have not been changed, the life of the stock coils is right around 20k miles give or take depending on driving habits.

from your albums, is your car turbo? was it ever?

what intake are you using? On my personal 8 (not the one the cat came from), when I had the MS CAI, I would experience the same things you are, water would get sucked into the intake and cause the engine to bog down and then die when you would come off the throttle. Went back to the stock intake and have never had the problem again.

Look I'm not asking you to come on here and show proof of your item you sold me. I'm asking what the problem is. My car is fully stock, otherwise I would of wrote on there what it has.

My point is, before cat I would hit a wall when on full throttle, i know what the cause of that is. Not the question at hand. My point was and is. I installed cat this problem rose up. I was looking for info on what other problems it may be, since I hate to go through the trouble of fighting to get my money back.
Car will start, idle and warm up just fine. No smoke or funny smells.
When hot on cruise it will fluctuate some rpms and feel like it's losing power. When I go into neutral when stopping the car just drops the rpm band and dies. Unless I give it gas.

There that's my problem.

Okay, you started a thread. Easier than PM

So before you installed the cat I sold you, the car felt as if it was hitting a wall? That sounds like coils. But... when the SSV acts up there is power loss at a certain RPM as well. But like I said in PM, stalling at idle can mean a loss of compression unless there is a vacuum leak or something like that. Have you checked the movement of the SSV?

Coils can cause misfire issues and fry the cat. Also if the coils are not firing at their optimum level, not burning all the fuel, then they could cause the cat to fail.
I would consider changing the coils and wires. More than likely this is the issue.
But it could also be the fuel pump wearing out, or clogged internal filter. Not delivering enough fuel pressure to the injectors under heavy load conditions..

Oh, and from looking it appears your car was turbocharged at one point and has had several different modifications. Are you sure it was put back to stock completely? Meaning, was it ever running perfectly after you went back to stock?

no i said it was only hitting a wall when i went full throttle. Now it hesitates on regular cruise control at 65. Ill check all my hoses and everything, but haven't messed with them in months. Don't see why it would be a vaccum problem.
If it was a comp problem, it would act up when cold too not just when hot after some load on it.

It doesn't feel like a misfire at all, iv had that problem before and this is totally different thats why im posting this. I will in fact get some new coils, but plugs and wires are like under 3k miles easy. So i could see them not burning 100% of the fuel could cause the cat to fail. Would it be different with a straight pipe? Cause like i said, this started Immediately after i installed the cat. I could see that being the problem since cat does have a filter.

oh and i don't put a heavy load on the engine at all. 65mph = 3250 rpm light.

So are you saying i can't put my own car back together? lol

Like i said, only problem i had was when on full throttle and its the coils. I KNOW.. Only put like 3k miles on it since turbo was off, which that was only for like 15 miles and no boost. I never changed the coils cause it didn't bother me, i drove the car under 6k most of the time, only to red line it slowly on the HWY. And i hardly drive it so i never got them.

keep your ideas coming, will buy coils today. though i don't want to. lol

Well, I have had the coils problem before, twice actually. that is why I went with the BHR kit on this new motor. So I know what it feels like, you just get to a certain RPM and then it feels like you are towing a boat anchor.

Clogged cats are obvious, that is not your issue. I'm not saying you didn't put your car back together correctly but I have seen what one missing vacuum nipple can do to an RX-8, causing it to throw a lean code and idle like ****.

So, you have no check engine lights? Is there a reason you have not visited the dealer?

Okay, got your PM. Being on my third motor in 122,000 miles, I can tell you that an RX-8 motor can appear to drive normally one day and then need a motor the next. My last motor lasted 75,000 miles and was running perfect when all of the sudden it began to stall periodically. It had relatively new coils, new wires, and plugs. I was also running one mod, a catless SR Midpipe. Being at 96,000 miles, I checked all the other obvious stuff, and then hit the dealer (midpipe installed). They called em the next day and told me it failed the compression test.

My first factory issued engine died slower, power just fell of slowly until the stalling started and at first it was every now and then coming off throttle but got worse over a month or two and eventually started stalling when hot.

I would give the dealer a shot, all they can tell you is it's not covered.

Many don't even experience the stalling, just a gradual loss of power which sometimes goes unknown due to some peoples calm driving habits.

I do have a check engine light. I'm going to blame it on the coils. Going to order the whole kit from Brice. I'll post up when I get this going. Hopefully it's just that.

Did it flash? Also, check your SSV, it only takes a second to see if it is moving freely and not sticking.
