Just bought a RX-8, need help

Hello all

Just got my 8 this saturday (feb 14th, val day present from my wife).

Has about 315 miles so far, i have been noticing the smell of oil sometimes when the car isnt moving. Since i just started using the econo air (fresh outside air no AC) im not sure if it was always like this or not.

I also noticed that the pressure gauge for the oil is two ticks above the middle notch, so i checked the oil and it is overfilled (factory or dealer must have done this).

Did any of you guys notice the smell of oil when you first boguht your 8's ?

Also, should i be worried about them overfilling the oil?

Thanks for any replies !!

Regarding the oil reading in the dash, that is normal and will always look like this so long as their is some oil in the car. People refer this oil pressure monitor as a "dummy" gauge. Regardless if your oil level is low, middle or high, it will always show 2 ticks past middle. But it is ever dips or moves you should immediately pull over because you lost oil pressure and probably have no oil in the car. Your car will consume a fair amount of oil in the first couple thousand miles so check you oil level via the dipstick every few fill-ups.

I never noticed a "smell" with mine, so I don't know if this directly related to getting overfilled with oil, maybe err on the safe side and have the dealer properly level it off.

Definite burn-off of some coatings. Had to leave my garage door open for a few hours after running for the first week or two.

I do not think the oil smell is product burning off. If that was the case why would you smell it right at start up it would take a while for the car to warm up enough to burn any undercoating or whatever. I have the same smell at startup and I think it is unburned fuel/oil being burned off when you first start the car. You see an extreme example of this when you flood the vehicle and finally restart it with the huge clouds of oily smoke. I do not think it is a concern however if only a bit at startup.

The other issue which you faced with the smell when you are standing idling sort of like at a light, well what i did was i bought the aldahyde filter and from that point on never smelled a thing in my car, it is great, when you buy it and take out the old ones you will see the difference in filters are night and day. there is a thread about this somewhere. by the way enjoy your new car
