Question Will it work: Metra install without HU

Quick question from a radio nube...
My stock radio is fried and I am not getting power to the A/C, defroster, etc., module (it's getting hot, and I can't turn on my AC as a result). All fuses are good, and as near as i can tell the wire from the cigarette lighter was left exposed after the install of an XM Radio a while back and grounded against the stereo (decent hypothesis?). The Metra kit is scheduled to arrive Friday and the HU will not be arriving until the second week in June.

Questions:
Would there be any harm in installing the Metra kit before recieving the HU (after repairing the cigar lighter wiring)?
Will doing so allow me to regain use of the AC controls and red display in the interim?
Should I still be getting power to the center push-button module without the stereo or is it possible that this burnt out in the process as well?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

No harm as far as I'm concerned. Just make sure to tape off the extra leads so nothing grounds out and starts a fire/shorts stuff out.

Thanks.

If no one else sees any harm in trying I will be sure to post the results...not that I think many other individuals would find themselves in the situation, but just in case...

I am still curious about the other questions above if anyone has any input. It would be good to know if I am going to need a new climate control module as well.
