Been quite an avid member for a couple of years now and am (finally) buying my Rx, done A LOT of reading - however cant seem to find any information on this topic for the Australian Market,

Looking to buy a 04-05 model, however apart from asking the owners - I cant actually tell if there has been any recalls carried out (e.g. updated starter installed) I remember reading something about a little sticker they put on the drivers door, is this right?

Asking some of the clueless owners this question is futile...to give you an idea about how stupid people can be, an owner didn't even know that his car could rev to 9rpm, and that there was 2 different displays on his dash for night driving.

Another question regarding the compression test (more for the mechanical minded) that Ill need to get done - My dad actually has a compression tester for a conventional piston engine, can this be used for the rotory, or is it an entirely different test,

There are recalls and mazda campaigns. Recalls are government required because of safety and will have a sticker put in the drivers side door well. There will be at most 2, one for exhaust heat shield near the fuel tank and another for A-Arms.

The rest is just suck it and see. If you can get the car on a hoist you can check the part number for the new starter. You can check the CCA of the battery to see if its the new one.

Plugs I wouldnt worry about as I would change them straight away anyway.

As for compression testing, you could use it but all it will give you is the maximum reading from one rotor (remember there are 3 chambers in 1 rotor) so wont really tell you much unless all 3 are pretty poor, and even then you need to know what rpm is was at. You need something that registers the pulses and rpm.

could probably be used at a pinch by removing the check valve and just watching the gauge pulse

 

That's great, I think I have seen some stickers, but didn't know anything about what they were for - they have bar-codes yes?...thanks for letting me know.

I don't know if this is possible for starters....but will get underneath as soon as possible - you say, check the part number, what should it be? or do you know where i can find what it should be? plugs will be changed, thanks for that, I can do that myself.

Thanks for the information on the compression testing - will defiantly need to get one done, checked with Brighton Mazda - they are charging $150 for the test alone, know of any other places i can try/cheaper?

/\ the new starter is about an inch longer than the old one - if you measure the length of it someone will be able to tell you which one you have pretty quick ....

 

Can not you contact the local Mazda dealer and give him the VIN # to check warranty/service history?

 

Do all Mazda dealerships have Vin numbers on file and if they have done the recalls??

 

Yes, ALL Mazda Dealers have the capacity to View ANY Mazda sold in Australia and it's warranty repair work History....

Either get friendly with your local Mazda Service Manager or Staff.
BTW they need the Full Chassis VIN Number...the JM0 one.
