KY Sounds like a turbo?

I've had my 8 almost a year. 04 MT lightning yellow 88,000 miles. I love the way the engine sounds. Its the only 8 I've ever rode in/drove before. A friend was riding with my and I gunned it. He swears up and down it sounds like it has a turbo. Do all 8's sound that way?

I think the MSP engine has a unique sound all its own, even on the the stocker exhaust. Doesn't really sound like a turbocharged car to me (I have one as a DD actually).

I...don't think it sounds like a turbo, unless you were hearing your intake. Unless you mean the sound of an engine under turbo boost, and not the turbo spool, but then that'd just sound like... an engine o_o

Regardless, I do love the scream of the Renesis as we rise in RPMs.

I get a fair amount of transmission whine since I switched fluids and it almost sounds supercharged.

It should sound more like a supercharger since a the wankel engine has been used as a supercharger for piston engines

It's hard to mistake the rotary engine for a turbo because with a turbo you usually hear a lot of SUUUUUUUUUUUUCKING noise of the air being rapidly moved.

if your exhaust has very little muffling, you can also hear the turbo from that side. Obviously this is much more pronounced without any exhaust.

Leave my mother out of this, sheesh.

OT: The engine definitely has a unique sound to it. I agree that with the tranny noise in some a SuperCharger is more like it.

I mentioned the intake, because I've stood in front of a friend's car with the RB duct while he decide to rev in place, and the noise was tremendous. That might be the reason the OP thought it sounded like a turbo

Hmm... I can see how the higher pitched whine can sound like a turbo; but until you actually hear/drive in a turbo 8, a stock sounds nothing like it.

i think it's just a mistake made by those who don't know quite how to put their finger on the sound. i've had a lot of people say it sounded like it had a turbo (especially after my AEM CAI). i don't personally think it does but as everyone said, it has a unique sound and when people who aren't really car people try to label it, that's the closest they come.

with a low mount turbo, there really isn't a lot of sound.

people need to worry about other senses besides sound when dealing with vehicles. I for one prefer the sense of touch - as I feel the G forces build

or maybe the sense of sight, as people cower in fear as they think my rx8 is about to explode from all the flames being thrown around*

* Not kidding. Used to get people knocking on my window yelling that my car is on fire and I need to get out and roll on the ground or something. Yeah, good old interceptor-x. Proper fueling with the AP resolved that crap before the police/fire trucks were called.

I can definitely here a suction sound when I rev the engine. Prolly just the intake? I really don't know how to describe the sound. If i'm lightly accelerating the engine produces a sound I love. If I accelerate hard that sound quickly sounds like a nest of pissed of hornets. But there is also a high pitched whine/whistling/spinning up sound? I'm trying to figure out what that sound is.
