Mustang GT

I am considering getting an 05' Mustang GT 5 speed manual. I test drove a few of them recently and loved the sound it makes and thought they were pretty fast. I went into it thinking the handling/steering/balance would be god awful from all the negative hype i have heard over the years, but I was actually quite pleasantly surprised to find that it felt pretty nice all around. For 15 grand and less than 50k miles, good practicality, excellent power, solid handling, it seems like a pretty good buy.

The 05+ Mustangs are completely redesigned and offer much better handling and styling (IMO) over previous Stangs.

Is this really a good idea or is all the negative hype really true? I think most of the negative hype comes from those who have never driven one. Kinda like how everyone dogs the 8 but haven't actually tried it themselves.

I'm dumping this over rated POS for a cobra asap. There's nothing like making 800+rwhp for 30k and thats car included.

Drove my brothers 07 Mustang GT.

The hype is true.

It doesn't handle for crap.

Coming from a 96 Mazda 626, the Mustang "might have" felt like it handled better back then.

But after driving an 8... every car i get into that isnt an "M" BMW or Porsche... handles like ****.

2011 Mustang GT 5.0 with the Track Pack

You know they even went to PCM controlled electric power assist steering, and Brembo brakes are an option. It's an aluminum block, so it sheds about 100 lbs of curbweight.

I'll make a prediction... live axle and all, the RX8 owners better watch out for these things on the road course. I'm considering buying one even before test driving it. I have high hopes.

As for an '05 Mustang... no. I'd buy a '05 GTO long before I'd buy an '05 Mustang. Go test drive one before you buy the Mustang. You can find them for the same price.

I saw a pretty bad *** Shelby GT500 Super Snake once.

It looked pretty nice as I passed it on the race track.

i test drove the s197 mustang when they first came out in '05. i drove a GT. i used to love mustangs as a kid, and still have somewhat of a soft spot for them, but this car felt really sluggish, bulky, and pretty isolated. but then again i was driving an fd at the time, so a lot of cars felt bulky and isolated in comparison. the quality was typical ford (not great, but not horrible either). the styling really turned me off, way too retro and unoriginal, both inside and out, and it was very oversized. the newest mustang is better-looking, with better build quality and handling, especially for a car w/ a live rear axle, but you're looking at an '05. my feeling of these cars is that they're decent but flawed, can be quite good-looking if done right w/ taste, and is in general nice as a daily driver or for someone who cares more about show, noise, and straight line speed rather than driving dynamics. they're probably also decently robust and reliable, easy to work on and, if you had to go to a mechanic, cheaper to repair. parts would also be cheap and plenty. so, kinda really depends on what you're buying it for. and if it makes you happy, it makes you happy

Nice.

The new GT is 500 pounds lighter, will have a better tuned suspension and brakes than the 2007-2009 Shelby GT500's, and here's a preliminary dyno from a pre-production 5.0 GT (to the wheels)

The Mustang has always been a source of cheap power. Not that there's anything wrong with that but there's going to be sacrifices in other areas.

There are cars out there for all types of people. I've always felt RX8 people are power "under the curve" drivers where they are concerned with overall drive-ability of the car from power to handling. It also depends on where you get your kicks fun wise. Being able to step on the throttle and be pulled into your seat is a good time for sure! The problem is too much of that will land you in serious legal trouble.

I'm sure the power of the V8 can be rather intoxicating. Perhaps one way to look at it is will you still be having fun when you're not wide open throttle?

Aren't the new Mustangs heavy? I know with the nice power increase across the board and the suspension tweaks and live axle upgrade,I wonder how well the Mustang handles? There not doing so hot in sports car racing world, well maybe the ST tuner challenge division, but othere forms of racing like Gran Am , ALMS they just don't perform well with other cars in the twisties.

Mustangs were always great drag cars though.

Like somebody mentioned before, its car that offers cheap speed with a bunch of sacrafices. I rather have a 370Z Nismo or a BMW 335i.

Exactly.

I know the stang doesn't handle great but really it's not THAT bad on the corners, and with so much power, i don't need to rail it on the twisties doing 85 to have any fun. It feels great accelerating out of turns with all that power, even if the speed you took the turn at was slow.

The only other cars I think of which can compete or even exceed the 05 Mustang GT in terms of power/handling for 15 grand are the pontiac gto and nissan 350z. Of course this is subjective, but the pontiac looks like it was designed in 1994 (hideous and soft and bubbly looking) and the Z looks ok on the outside but god awful inside, so that leaves me with the mustang. I think it looks solid inside and out. Not amazing but not bad at all; certainly far better than the average car on the road.
