Video equipment - Motorsports HERO

Has anyone ever seen/tried this?

http://www.goprocamera.com/index5.htm

It seems like a really nice package for $150. I don't know too much about digital video, but 3Megapixels (2056x1536) seems like a decent resolution (I know it's not HD, but...) [Edit: that's the still-image resolution. video resolution is 513x384. Not quite as impressive...] Most importantly, the image stabilization seems really good, at least at the level of camcorders that are 3-4x the price (though obviously they also have 3x the features as well, but I don't need all that). Look at the middle video on that page, with the lotus Exige; video quality and stabilitation look damn nice.

Anyone who knows something about video have any thoughts on this? I'd like to take car-based STABLE video, but don't have the budget for expensive equipment.

Here's a CNET review as well: (this is for the wide-angle lens, which is different (though similar price) as the regular lens)

BTW, it's $149 plus shipping from Amazon. $179 from the manufacturer.

First of all, all my "in-car" videos are shot using the Hero cams:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEf47o_tOrs

Etc.

Second - I might be able to beat even the Amazon price if I can get more than a couple of people interested in purchasing the system.

There is no penalty for crossing the line. It is only a course deviation if you miss a gate.
That said, the course was on a surface that already had lines (put there by the Bondurant school) that had nothing to do with the course.
All clean runs.

MM- Any comments on sounds quality? Is it stereo or mono? And it looks like you have both the wide-angle and standard lens versions....and preferences/comments on which is better for which applications?

As for a group buy....perhaps I post about doing that, but we'll see. They seem to pop up on eBay in low volumes for ~$100 to 110 plus shipping, so I might just grab one of those. However, a group buy would mean a lot more RX-8 footage out there, which would be nice...

i have one, its pretty decent. good in the day as well as night, just dont have the cam facing directly into the sun.

as far as sound quality i havent been able to find a good medium, its either too quiet or picks up alot of wind noise for me.

i would still recommend this can for anyone looking to record some driving.

Sound quality is, in a word, meh.
I record on the low level (to avoid distortion) and then play around with it post.
You can hear the sound in my videos.
Its definitely not audiophile/broadcast quality.

The new model with wide angle is more interesting.
How much would it be?

I might just use Single Use VDO camera + hack.

Problem is I need to find very strong sucton cup camera holder.

See, I don't know, wide-angle is nice in some ways, but it takes away from others. Which do you think makes everything feel faster?? :-)

MSRP/expensive pricing for the whole kit is $179 for regular-lens and $199 for wide-angle, but you can find them both for less than $150 on various interwebz sites.

Anyone else have a preference between wide-angle vs. regular lens shots?

Wide angle give you more field of view. Like your eyes can see, minus distortion.
It won't make your car look faster. But it will show you where your opponents were and how the track goes.

If you want your car to look faster.
You can fast forward it.
Just kidding.
