Hi,

I ahd my car clay bar and then waxed. I noticed some "stuff" still on my front bumper. They stated it was bug residue and that it had "baked into the paint".

Is there any way to remove this. I have the blue and white bottle of bug remover (forget brand). However the detailer stated he already did this.

Bug guts are acidic and melt your clear coat. So if its a hazy spot on your hood thats probably what it is.

Now how to fix/clean it I don't know. Theres a few car detailing sites around the internet and it might of been answered before on the forum. I don't care too much since I live in Houston and my paint will die a slow agonizing death no matter what I do.

 

hey bbq: if the bug stayed on there for too long, it'll eat through clear coat (just as HM699 mentioned)

If it isn't thru your clearcoat then rubbing alcohol is the ultimate bug/sap remover. Just make sure if it does come off you immediately apply polish/wax as rubbing alcohol also takes off anything up to the clearcoat. However don't do this if the cc is already gone and the bug guts is in your paint. No idea what rubbing alcohol does to unprotected paint.

I'd love to know what polish/wax you had on your car. As long as you have a few coats of anything it should be able to deal with nasty bug guts for a few weeks w/o a wash. If you haven't been waxing/polishing or at least having wax applied at a drive thru wash (yuck) then damage to the clear coat occurs pretty quick.

Mothers canuba (sp?) wax in the red tin. Bought the car in December last year. Waxed it once in early February and then again this month. Never had this happen in my life, it's a bummer for sure.

I will try the rubbing alcohol and also rubbing compound. Heck I will probably try bug and tar removal first.....just to make sure he wasn't BSing me.

Let us know. If it happened over just a couple days my money is on BS and the alcohol will make it vanish. Unless the paint industry has started breeding super acidic insects specifically to combat long-lasting innovations in the automative clearcoat/polish/paint market in order to force people to pay to repaint their cars.

 

Well hit the nose/bumper this weekend...

Bug and tar remove= no difference.

91% rubbing alcohol= Made no difference.

Looking hard and close at the bumper I almost wonder if this existed prior to me buying it. I noticed a LOT of little touch up paint spots. Some had a "bumpy" feel to them suggesting, to me, that they painted over something.

So I guess I can hope for a minor front end accident to replace the bumper with an aftermarket one.

It sucks as I really keep the car immaculate. Every time I walk past it I mutter while looking at the nose .

Next time I will have to pay more attention when looking a car over. I though I was pretty good at that, oh well.
