Post RX8 Residuals

Hi All,

Like the idea of the Europe forum! (UK would be even better when there are enough people to warrant it).

Just returned from holiday to see the UK prices just announced, so has anyone read anything as to how the residual values are expected to hold up for the RX8 for the first year or so?

Top Gear magazine put it under their list of new cars to avoid this year! (whereas the 350Z was the opposite) , but if supply is restricted and demand is high then they may well hold up their value in the early stages.

If the residuals look good I may be very tempted . I am currently on my 2nd Impreza and I have lost loads on both of them and dont want to be bitten again.

I think they should hold up well, at least for the first year or so of supply (i.e. to mid 2004). When I called my local dealer earlier yesterday he had only been able to accept customer orders for the previous seven days, and I was already the fifth person on the list. And this is despite the fact that the first cars won't be shipped for another five months or so.

You only need to look at the Mini Cooper S etc. to see how resale values can be boosted by shortage of supply.

Top gear put it on their list of cars to avoid this year ?
That seems odd...

Out of interest what were their reasons ?

350z ? Pah. Just doesn't do it for me in the way the RX8 does...

PS - Interesting that pre-orders are already happening. Last year the RX7 was sold they only flogged 25 all year... Looks like the RX8 is already more successful 6 months or so from launch ! That has to be a good sign for resale I would think.

Yep. the fat bloke from top gear December Issue P19 has an article about the new Mini and a list called "JD's New Car Cash Cows"

Hits are:
BMW Z4
CLK Cabriolet
350Z
VW Beetle Cabrio

Misses are:
Citroen Pluriel
Mazda RX8
Saab 9-3 Cabriolet
VX220 Turbo

I agree with Simon that as long as demand exceeds supply then prices should hold up well. Lets hope TG are wrong.

As the 350Z is already selling under MSRP in the states after only 4 months on the market, TOP GEAR may not be that accurate. Maybe they are thinking that there is too much hype on the RX-8 and it will be oversold. Is Nissan going to severly limit the number of cars they sell in europe? This would help it retain value. But if it is selling for 5,000 pounds more than the RX-8, its value will decrease quicker than the RX-8 as many people will concider them equals.

Just my 2 cents.

you folks in the uk should read your "daily miror" news paper. that is esentially what they said. if you don't have the paper i copied a copy of it in this thread as well as an article from the sun.

laws of economic supply, demand and price

The trick in residual values is (besides vehicle quality) largely influenced by the ancient free-makret laws of supply and demand. We know from press releases that Mazda's worldwide production is limited at only 50.000 units per year. Mazda set the price of this car at 20.000 GBP. Now it does not take a scientist to predict the residual values!
