"Remember yesterday how we talked about the 2009 Hyundai Genesis being a value proposition at a sub-$30,000 price point with a V8? Well, Automotive News is reporting Hyundai Motor America has priced the new Genesis luxury sedan at $33,000 for the V6 version and $38,000 for the V8."

Now that they're arriving at dealers, most V6s are priced at 35k and over, and most V8s are priced at well over 40k (as high as 45k).

I know the Phaeton was much more expensive, but it was from VW, with some fantastic technology. It shared a platform with Bentley, in fact, and had a 12 cylinder available.

This is very expensive for a Hyundai, and reached into Cadillac, Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti and Lexus territory.

So, what sayeth you, rotary heads?

I predict that this car will be selling with heavy incentives (7k and up) within the first year.

Very stupid move by them if true. what they should do is, slowly get to the 30K+ range. but that is just me.

 

people will have a hard time paying that much for a hyundai even if it is worth it. the name sells

 

There are a LOT of people who will see the name, then the price tag, then just laugh it off.

its not a corvette zr-1. its a hyundai. pricing it +30k will be a bad move.

the ghetto already has a wannabe luxury sedan. its called the chrysler 300c and they sell in droves. they also start at 25k.

 

i can't disagree about the genesis sedan.. but the coupe has already sent everyone running back to the drawing board just to not let hyundai get the drop on them.. i would be really excited about upcoming vehicles if it weren't for upcoming laws..

I don't really understand who would actually buy this car outside of Korea.

Non-enthusiasts won't pay $40k for a Hyundai when they can get a BMW/Benz/Audi for the that price, and car guys won't want it because it's overweight and soft.

 

honestly, if i didn't know it was Korean, i'd say it was a hell of a deal.

Prior to the Phaeton, VW had nothing in the LuxoBarge market and the median price of their cars was probably $25-35k. Not to mention that VW owns Audi who make the A8 which is a well regarded, well entrenched product.

No, the Genesis is going to be competing in the full-size sedan market segment that is much larger and that Hyundai already has experience with (Azera/XG350). The jump from Hyundai's current median price to the top-spec Genesis isn't nearly as great as the Phaeton. I doubt that you will see very many Genesis' stickered at north of $40k and the advertizements will probably say "Starting at $35k" which isn't nearly as much of a sticker shock. IIRC, the Phaeton started at over $85k with no options.

 

I disagree with most posters. I think it will sell.

Hyundai used to be bottom of the barrel in quality terms, but they turned that perception around with cars like the Sonata, plus one of the best warranties in the business. People are thinking differently about Hyundai now.

 

Hyundai's problem, mark my words, is that this car will not be cross shopped against the true luxury marques.

No.

It will be cross shopped against less expensive cars, both fwd and rwd.

Cars such as the Maxima, Avalon, V6 Camry, VW Passat - maybe the Lexus ES (entree level lux) and Infiniti G (ditto).

No one considering BMW, Mercedes, Audi or the higher end Lexus or Infiniti models will consider it.

The question isn't whether it is a better value than a BMW 5 Series. The question is will the Avalon or Maxima buyer pay 7,000 to 10,000 more for the Genesis?

What a terrible time to introduce a rwd, non-fuel efficient car, too - Lexus sales were down 22% in the month of June!

It is priced very well.
It will be a thorn in the Cadillac CTS's side.

 

The rumors were hot and heavy for a long time that the V8 would be right around the 30k mark, and Hyundai did nothing to come out and those rumors.

I don't think people will cross shop the CTS and Genesis. Who knows, though.

 

I wouldn't see why people wouldn't cross shop, unless they are trying to be snobby, but their loss.
The Genesis is basically as big as the STS for CTS money (but the CTS grew up some)
The Genesis is very competitive, a 295hp V6 standard vs. the 263 hp V6 of the CTS
also the Genesis is competitive with the STS's standard direct injection V6, due to higher curb weight of STS over genesis V6.

I sat in both at the autoshow, and the Genesis was bigger inside, and felt more luxurious that the CTS.

 

I think the bigger issue is going to be whether Hyundai managed to get the fit and finish into the $35k+ market. It's one thing to make a car that doesn't fall apart, it's another to do that AND make it a pleasure to drive.

 

hmm, i didnt consider cadillac. it could definitely pose a problem for gm.

but i dont see this interfering in any way with bmw, mbz, or lexus. it really cant compare to a bmw in drive quality. pricing it in bmws territory is stupid.

 

like all things made in korea, it will run for a while and then start to fall apart suddenly for no good reason.

i'd be curious to see what it'd do to their economy if the u.s. protested & boycotted all their shotty electronic appliances and cars etc.

Don't make me pull out the 2007 JD Powers dependability study graph in which Hyundai and Kia were above Mazda.

 

For that price/millage.. BMW 135 or 335, or for muscle, SRT8 vehicles! I do think that Hyundai has turned around their name, but generally it is still the 20k and less market that has adopted them. As you get past 30k, brand and driving dynamics are given more consideration.

Interesting topic... Once upon a time both Honda and Toyota were looked upon as Hyundai/Kia is today. Certainly Hyundai has a long way to go to be looked at as Honda is, but some day I venture to say it's possible. A $35K+ Hyundai today? I don't think it has a chance. Should Hyundai market the car under a "luxury" brand as Honda did back in the 80's when they created Acura and then maybe... Still too soon I think though.
