Lugnuts with aftermarket wheels

Swapped out the stock 18"s for 18" ADR Flite 5's. The factory lugnuts were not long enough to bolt the wheel completely against the hub. I had to use these cheap open-ended style nuts very similar to these:

While they do the job, they're ugly and beginning to rust. I want to buy deeper, all black, close-ended lugnuts but don't know what size I need. Some say 12x1.25, 14x1.5, 12x1.5 and still some others just say 1/2" What exactly do these sizes mean and which size would I need to be longer than stock?

How do I know they are longer than stock? And those in particular are not black, but thanks.
