'swtich-blade' key on an 04?

My key fob is dead and i'm looking for another. Can I buy one of the newer flip-out keys, have it cut to match mine and program the transmitter to the car w/o an issue? My 8 is an 04.

you can definitely get it. bought mine on ebay from transponder island. you can program the remote unlock/lock function. instructions come with it. then get the key cut. and if you have at least 2 original keys (even valet), you can also program the key itself. there's a DIY on how to do it.

btw, make sure you get the one with the trunk release button. they have keys without the button (for CX-7,CX-9, 3 hatch, etc)

while you're here, can you direct me to the programming directions for the keyfob and the key? I have 2 keys for the car, so I should be in good shape, right?

instructions on programming the key fob comes with it on printed paper (at least the one i got from transponder island). a series of opening door, turning key on, closing door etc. i was really shocked at how easy it was to program the fob. i'll try to look for the instructions and post it up just in case. as for the key, yep you're in good shape. here's the link to the DIY:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=15244.html

i had to go to the dealer to program mine since i only got ONE freakin' key when i got my 8 (yes, used)... but yea, i love the switchblade key.

Same Question, but for an '53

My remote has also died recently & was wondering about the switchblade key, but does it work on an '53 model, if so when can i get the switchblade key from, cos my dealer says' that it will only do 05 onwards' & hence wont even order the key.

i'm thinking it's a typo and you meant '03. it will work for 2003-2008 models. got mine from ebay, store is transponder island. make sure you get the one with the trunk release button and follow the rest on this thread.

dealer is just bull***ting you about it not working. they're just reading off their service instructions and since the switchblade keys came out with the '05, they just assume it doesn't work.

mine says '04 model but build is late '03 so technically it's an '03. i believe 03-04 are generalized as 04 since that was the year released (?)

later on I'll post this in its own thread so it will hopefully help those of us with the same questions but here's my story...

My remote died just like yours and I wanted one of the newer switchblade ones since it is much smaller of a setup. I ordered one off of transponder island on ebay just like these guys and I couldn't get it to program. The FCC ID was different from my original remote (but none of them matched so I just went with it). I took the one I ordered to the dealer and played dumb by asking them if it could even be programmed. The tech took it outside and failed to get it to program. He brought a brand new genuine mazda one out and got it to program right away. The issue was not the one I bought on ebay being broken...it was that it had a different FCC ID than the one the dealer used. The parts dept guy explained that there were 10 different FOBs that look EXACTLY the same and only one will work. My advice is to either go to the dealer and get them to tell you the FCC ID for the one that will work with your car or get the same one I have (I also have an '04 GT). Here's the FCC ID of the one that DID work:

KPU 41788

the one I got from ebay was different but I don't have it with me (sent it off to get it replaced)

I ended up buying the one from the dealer right on the spot. They felt sorry for me so they gave me the whole setup, cut and programming for $190. Complete robbery but it works and I was tired of f'ing with it. The one on ebay was only 45 and I'm sure it works just fine.

Good luck!

Mine arrived from the ebayer MidWestKeyless today via USPS. Starting the remote programming now... then it's off to Ace Hardware, who already told me they can do the cut but no guarrantees, and then the key mating procedure with my main and valet keys.

2004 AT. Will be post back with results. Hope it works, it's a nice key.

Worked with no issues whatsoever. My 2004 4AT's manufacture date was late 2003.

I followed the mating procedures right out of the Mazda service manual:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-code-your-own-key-remote-43873/

And the key:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...264370088&rd=1

+ the $5.00 Ace charged me for the key cut.

I just noticed it has the same FCC Id that you mention.

The FCC ID on the remotes that came with my car is KPU41805. The Switchblade that I and zoom44 linked to is the exact one i went with, soup to nuts.

The procedure was dead easy. The hardest part was convincing the guy at Ace Hardware that it was okay to cut the blank... that I knew exactly what I was doing, and that I would not hold him responsible if it didn't work.

Where can I find my FCC ID? It only says " Visteon Model No.41844 " on the back of my current remote?

The FCC is the Federal Communications Commission of the USA. I highly doubt you'll find products targeted for the European market to have FCC certs. There's an equivilant EU agency but the name escapes me at the moment.

I should've clarified previously, the procedure is dead easy for US market 2004 RX-8s.

I have ordered a new uncut switchblade key for my 2004 rx-8, however I do not have any of the original fobs for my car.

Is it still possible to program the switchblade fob to work with my car?

Also I only have one master key and one valet key for the car, can I use the valet key as my second key to program the new key?

I only had the valet and one master, so I guess it'll work just fine. My key fob quit working completely, so it played no part in my programming.

walmart cut mine for free!
