Red face Question about rotors and brake pads!!

I am in need of new ones.. But there are so many and i have no idea as to which ones are good.. So heres where you all come in at.. I was looking for some threw ebay. Which ones are good? The prices are pretty cheap.. Whats up with the ones with holes or lines on them? Which ones do you perfer on ebay? And let me know with the drills or lines or both..

don't get cross drilled ones.

you're best bet for longevity is OEM blank rotors, and some hawk street bads..

the slotted one will just eat you pads faster then blank, because they act as a cleaning slot for the pads..

There are lot's of debate and discussions about usefullness of cross drilling and slots, but basically the theory is that they're supposed to help to vent gasses that may form between the pad and the rotor surface during heavy braking. Cross drilled are probably fine for the street, but if you intend to do track events, most drivers will advise against them since they're prone to cracking due to the high braking demands of track driving.

The RX-8 has very good brakes from the factory and you might be dissappointed with aftermarket pads due to excessive noise, dust, or performance. If you're just going for looks the cross drilled slotted are fine. They may wear the pads faster though.

As far as new pads, Mazda OEM or Hawk HPS are good. Just remember higher performance pads will tend to dust more and produce more brake noise.

I dont do track racing. I just speed around on the highway. What I dont want is the noise.. I sometimes do brake hard a lot.. Thanks for the suggestions..

stick to blank rotors. no drilled or slotted. as for pads, i use axxis ultimates and haven't had a problem. very very quiet. check out www.tirerack.com may not be the best prices, but they do ship out fast and are very informative.

there are so many options for brakes, it's kind of hard to say which one best suits you until you try them out yourself.

Rotors serve as heat sinks. The drilling of rotors sheds some of the mass that serves as a heat sink in the search for more ventilation and heat exchange into the atmosphere.

The reality is that most of the affordable drilled rotors out there can't sustain the heat cycle that a driving event will throw at them- they are prone to crack. They should hold up fine on the street however.

If you have a look at most of the rotors on cars at track events, you will see lots of blanks or slotted, but very few cross drilled rotors.

I use the hawk ceramic pads and no noise, low dust and the perform good at the track. Did I mention they are 4 LBS lighter each.

Thanks for the link.

I just priced out some OEM pads and rotors from my Mazda dealer - $695 for the parts - rotors and pads. Looks decently priced compared to what I've seen out there.

What was interesting was that they said the the pads (maybe it was the rotors) had a lifetime warranty. I'm thinking that makes more sense for the rotors.

Has anyone just replaced pads on their RX-8 and left the original rotors on?

I just ordered the rx8 brake upgrade kit from the rx7store.net I got 4 rotors and the hawk hps pads all for i believe was $445. Ill let you know how they go for me, you can option to get the rotors slotted, or drilled and slotted. I should install on sunday so let's see how it goes. The rotors are e-centric and the price was also really good, and i have also heard good things about them from a couple of the members here on the site, so im exicted to see how they turn out.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think that you need new rotors? Are your current rotors cracked or worn below the service limit? Unless you've got 100k+ miles, you've cracked a rotor at a track day, or you drove around with the pads worn down to the backing plates, chances are you don't actually need new rotors.

Unless you've just got $500 burning a hole in your pocket, I'd stick with the rotors you've got.

I just figured that if they squeak I need new of something.. But I did have them looked at they said rotors are fine and brake pads can be change but not a must at the moment..they said they can cut and rotate the rotors and see how that goes.. They also said that I could be over heating them as well, which I am.. Does this sound right so far? Do I let them cut them or jus buy new ones? I'm going to buy pads to see as well..

After doing track days and competitively autocrossing for over a decade, I've come to realize that 99.9% of the people who think they drive their car hard on the street really don't have a clue. I don't mean to to come off as rude, but people who have not consistently pushed their car to the limit and beyond in a controlled environment really don't have a good appreciation of what their car is capable of. You are not driving hard enough on the street to overheat your brakes, I can promise you that.

Squeaky brakes are a known issue with the RX-8. There is a Technical Service Bulletin from Mazda regarding the problem. If your car is still under warranty, you should be able to print this bulletin, take it to your local dealer, and have the pads replaced for free. That's really all your car needs.

If it isn't under warranty, order a new set of OEM pads, take them and the bulletin linked above to your local mechanic, and have them follow the procedure. Should take care of the squeaking.

Lastly, take yourself out to celebrate the $500 you just saved by not buying a bunch of parts you don't need.

Sparky no worries!! Nothing wrong with the good ol' truth and help.. I was just agreeing with what the guy was saying.. Ha.. I just nod and agree.. So he said "hard driving or braking" and I said sure why not! That's why I'm asking here because its all foreign to me.. But yes saving $500 is always great! Hmm what to buy for my car now.. Yes, my car is jus a daily driver.. I'm going towards the OEM or Hawks I read a lot of good things and I don't mind spending more for them.. I jus wanted new rotors because one of my back ones is getting rust ..
