High Flow Cat

Hey guys, what high flow cat do you recommend? Im looking for something that will have a deep sound when used with the racing beat exhausts. I would go catless but I really dont want to deal with a CEL right now. I also want something that will pop a few flames because thats cool lol. Please share your experiences, im sure many people will benefit from this.

Not sure if the supercat will pop flames, catless will. Also with catless the smell is pretty extreme. RP is good, I hear you can expect a whopping 5hp from it but hey, no cel, no smell, good sound, and better flowing exhaust.

I have a midpipe and Im very happy with it. Lots of flames, it loud with the stock catback, and I got some power out of it.

Hopefully something I said helped....

Weird though, somebody on this forum was selling a Supercat that displayed the CEL.

Never had a CEL light with my RP unit. Worked like factory stock. Made the RB exhaust sound real nice. Not too over bearing, which in hearing some 8's with the midpipe I thought they sounded way, WAY too loud.

don't get the greddy. (requires a LOT of work to get it to run properly)

Look at the Esmeril kit for sale right now by NgoRX8, it's priced close to $1k below standard price.

I just installed a used RP Supercat this past weekend. Super easy install (with guidance from my dad, the uber mechanic). I was also able to reuse the front gasket and rear seal. Sound is definitely more aggresive, even with stock exhaust and intake...I don't know about flames though. I have only been running for about 100 miles, but as of now, there are no CELs.

I'm really looking forward to getting a MS Exhaust (Ver. 2) and MS CAI this coming weekend. I hope it sounds great and won't be too ricey.

keep in mind i don't shoot flames like a catless pipe would. you have to try harder with the high flow, get her nice and hot and keep the revs really high. it happens for me when i shift at 9k but it may be different for everyone. if you want instant flame action then you need the catless pipe

Is the smell with a catless really as disgusting as some people say? Also is their a cheap way to turn the cel light off other than buying a accessport? If the catless is going to give me more power once the turbo is installed then ill probably just order that and the catback from racing beat.

i use the rp supercat. been having it for about a month now. with the mazdaspeed exhaust it sounds great and havent had an issue yet. there is a new version of the supercat. here is the email they sent regaurding the new cat verses the old.

"You are correct that the new V2 converter is different than the one in the picture. The original RP SuperCat had a smaller metallic substrate converter. It flowed well, passed emissions testing, but had a tendency to distort if temperature parameters were exceeded. We went to a custom made ceramic unit which has slightly more flow and far higher temperature ratings. We went to this type converter about a year ago and have had no failures or issues. Hope you enjoy the product and feel free to contact us with any further questions. Thanks"

Any catback should be compatible with the RP Supercat. It tapers down in the rear to meet up with the stock exhaust so anything that is compatible with stock cat should work fine with the Supercat.

Also, I have the RP supercat and RB Rev8 and they sound awesome together!! Going on 10k miles with them and no CEL.

Yeah, it's nasty. Have you ever pumped gas and accidently spilled some & you reek of gasoline. It's like that. And no, there really isn't a fool proof cheap way of turning off the CEL light. OBD is doing what it is supposed to do, detecting that there is no catalytic there. For the marginal hp gain you would get froma testpipe vs. a hi-flow cat the tradeoffs are not worth it.

No cat is freakin' nasty. When you stop at a redlight with the windows down, you will be inhaling some strong odors. If you get (mid-pipe), save it for race days. Get a hi-flow for regular DD.

okay, I have an RP midpipe and I use my 8 as a DD. It smells like an old school muscle car, theyre exhaust fumes. Yes with the windows down you will smell it but its not bad. With the windows up I have yet to smell an exhaust fume.

$160 installed for flames at will and more power = worthwhile mod.

PS- I have a VERY EASY fix to the cel you will get. Find a really hot wallet size picture of your girlfriend and put it there, no one will ever know/see the cel behind the picture. Im serious.

I shouldve thought of that, you are truly the man. Im thinking the rp high flow is the way to go. Ill probably go with the esmeril kit too because from what I can see its the best bang for the buck plus the bragging rights you get with a T-70. I know this is changing the topic but does anyone have experience with the dash guage pod from rx8strakes? Im looking for something that can pass as stock.

Well, that's your opinion. For some "old school muscle car" smell = stinky tailpipe. Maybe I'm older now, or maybe I think my $34,000 car shouldn't smell like a $500 hooptie and I don't want to ghetto out my car with pictures everywhere & junk in my car. You can do what you like with your car. I have my opinion, you have yours.

PS gtballa, you should check out Mazdamaniac's turbo kit as well. Essentially a Greddy kit, but with the problems fixed & much larger turbo.
