Before I punch holes in my gas tank mounting my amp...

I figured I'd check to see if someone here has been up underneath the car and can tell me if mounting the amp to the trunk floor directly behind the center pass through is safe or not. I tried to check myself, but without a lift it's pretty impossible. I know that a lot of people mount their amps in the little groceries recess in the trunk, but I really like that space so I want to avoid using it at all costs.

well let me be the first to warn you. there is a canister on the right side
under neath, that catches gas vapor from the tank. punch a hole in that
and it will cost you. my buddy mounted mine on the floor right where your
oil is and it cost me later when we decided to move the amp to the left...
i cut some wood painted it black mounted the amp to the wood,
and put velcro on the bottom to grab the carpet.

This is exactly what I was worried about. Thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll get some MDF and slip it under the carpet and mount the amp to that.

I have a ground point about 4 inches away from the forward left corner of the recess and there was nothing under it for a good bit, so I was safe drilling there. Also, what is the deal with the towel(s)?

You mean you don't carry towels?

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have... any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Or you could just use the hook side of velcro across the bottom of your amp. Provided that it grabs our carpet, that amp's not going anywhere.

Not from the car moving around anyways. I like to take what I call "Oakland precautions" on my car. This means everything has to be affixed with a fastener that requires tools to remove. I don't like the idea that a crack head can break a window, pop my trunk and un-velcro my amplifier before walking off with it. I really want to connect it directly to the floor if at all possible (Locking bolts on the underside would be ideal so they could wrench on the bolt but not get anywhere) but I DON'T want to put a hole in something important, and I just can't see or reach up under there.

Might be a good temporary measure though...

I understand where you're coming from. But I gave up on all that. I pay an extra $3/month to have $2,000 worth of add on equipment covered under insurance. Why? Well first, MANY thieves will simply smash/damage/ruin anything they can't take with them. Next, if adding extra security means making the install look worse, it's not worth it. I dump far too much money into this for the install to suffer because of some punk 19-year old kid.

I don't know how many times I've seen screw driver holes punched through subwoofers because they couldn't get the box out of the car. I don't know how many times I've saw screwdriver holes smashed into the faceplate of a $500 headunit because the installer did a good job installing and thieves are too stupid to carry a pair of Pioneer or Sony cage keys with them. I can't count how many FACTORY headunits I've seen stolen, breaking the s#it out of the dash to get it out....

F it. If someone is breaking it my car, have at it. I'm not going to gift wrap it for them, but I'm not using a bar and pad lock either. Keep your receipts and let insurance buy me new stuff. Other than that, use the obvious tool. Don't bump where you park.
