Just noticed a engine oil leak on my 2007 RX8 GT that has 19000 km on the clock. The leak produces a 8-10 inch size circle of oil after a 12 hour period just to the right of centre, on the passenger side front. I can not see any sign of oil when looking under the hood.
Has anyone had this type of problem? Any idea what it may be? I have an apt at the Mazda dealer Sat Apr 4/08.

The oil metering pump is in that area.

 

When was your last oil change and who did it?
Yes, the oil pump is in that locale, but so is the drain plug.

 

You think forgetting to replace the crush washer on the drain plug might do this?

 

The oil changes have been done on schedule, every 8000 km all by the same Mazda dealer. This is my second RX8 and I check the oil often. My first Rx8 a 2005 never lost a drop.

 

Last change was right at 16000 km, mid Jan. The leak seems to be about a week old. The last time I put oil in was just over a week ago. I checked it before I added oil and it took 1/2 quart. Seemed normal to me. I checcked it last night after discovering the leak and it took 1 quart.

 

It's possible. Was thinking maybe washer not replaced and finally showed up........or possibly no washer used. Either one

I'd just start easy.......... by getting under there, trying to see where it's coming from, maybe clean around the drain plug and see what happens. If that's not it then move on to the more difficult area(oil pump seals.....lines etc.). I'd also clean all the way around the pan and see what happens.

Looks like the OP is gonna have the dealer do it anyway, so it might be a moot point. Not on this car(knock on wood), but I've actually taped paper towels down
to the parking spot over the approx. position to try help locate where. As you know, it can drip and run along way from the source sometimes.

By the way, my wife and I spend the month of Feb in Florida every year, and I never see many RX8's down there. I counted 3 in the entire month this year. Yours looks realy nice. I love your rims. I have simalar one's I use for our dreaded winters.

It depends upon if the leak is in the front of the car or near the firewall.
Can't tell by the post.

Could be a rear seal.

Just bring it in. Its under warrenty.

You're under warranty, so that's good. But I've been to a few dealers in the past year I've owned my 07 and as many members will tell you, the dealer isn't always going to help. Make sure you speak to the service manager FIRST then request a master tech. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've had problems not resolved because I didn't follow this method.

Aside from you dealer and other member advice, check to ensure your oil filter is on properly. Mine was not installed correctly from the factory and it was hell to get off. I'm lucky the threads weren't stripped. Your problem doesn't sound like this, but it won't hurt to check.

As other said: 1) Dealer (speak with the service manager FIRST) 2) Check drain plug and crush washer and 3) check the oil filter seal. I'm no expert, but I think this is a logical course of action.
