Microtech variable intake valving question.

Just wiring in our Microtech system to the engine, now we have 3 aux. outputs which we could use with a few servo's to control the inlet ports - but I'm just wondering how everyone else has done this, as servos tend to be a little flaky in rally conditions.

We don't have any of the control system from the car for them - I'm assuming it's and ECU controlled vacuum distribution block of some kind?
Is there any way of utilising this with the Microtech, and if so, what are we looking for to get hold of one, I have no idea what it looks like!

Sorted, grabbed the intake off a car in the scrapyard and plumbed the control system into our airbox, cheers for the offer of help though.

Next question, how come the bloody thing has 3 oil ports!

Does anyone know how the control units on the intake themselves are fired - it looks like they have a ballast - so do I just need to hook up 12v from the ignition and and earth, or do they have to be triggered with a switch?

If anyone can help asap it would be much appreciated, the car is at an event in 2 weeks so time is getting short.

Anyone that comes up with the answer which works on the car I will offer $10 to through Paypal if that gets the replies in quicker!

Thanks
-Phillip

I assume you are talking about the APV valve on the lower manifold. The other 2 are controlled by a vacuum signal from an electric solenoid controlled by the PCM

It is controlled by voltage signal to the servo motor by the PCM. It is not 12V...I believe it is +/- 5V with the reversal of polarity being the trigger to open and close.

Ah, that would be to large valve on the front of the lower manifold?
If so we disconnected that and blocked it off, as it appear to be an idle control, I guess not?
I need to know how the 2 vacuum signals are triggered - is it just a 12v feed to trigger them, and would you know if it's polarity sensitive?

I must point out that the only RX-8 part on this car is the Renesis itself, so we don't have any of the subsytems to leave in, just the microtech to drive them.

Hopefully you blocked it open...if it's closed...your missing a large part of the intake tract....

I'm not sure if the signal is +12V...I could check for you....but I won't be home till Wed.

it would be worth a call to Scott....he has that info for sure

Didn't appear to be anything behind it bar the disc valve in it itself?
The one with the 5-pin trapeziodal connector yes?

There is a gear drive that opens and closes the valve.

Scott has a nice block off plate that holds the gear in a closed position

It would work at any position you wanted...it's designed to block it open...not closed...but I'm sure it would work either way..

After scanning through a fair few mazda papers I've got the signals and rpm switch points for everything now, but it looks like there's no way to drive the APV with the Microtech alone, pity.

Plumbing the engine breathers in is the next bit of fun!

I was interested in this also but I would like to keep it locked in the open position unless it is something the AP can controll.

AP has full control of it...If the stock ECU can do it...the AP should be able to do it as well

Eureka moment - I can control the APV by using a DPDT relay switched from an output on the Microtech, hook the bottom two pins (which I think operate the motor) up to the two origins, and then set one side of each to 12v, one side to ground (obviously one the other way to the other) and then it should switch +12v and ground between the two pins.

Woo.

In fact, anyone else needing to do similar with any other control units without any trigger outputs - or piggy back units without full control - you could use the same and simply put in a trigger from the rpm signal.

Well, I will say this, regardless of what power she pulls on the dyno over the next week or so, the LCB vs stock manifold debate could be solved on noise alone.

It sounds superb with with the LCB on, the exhaust noise is slightly off beat and far deeper, without that tinny, metallic edge rotaries often get with aftermarket exhausts.
