Upgrade to 206kw

Just got back form the local dealer, where I was having a gander at the 40th Anniversary RX8. Was chatting to the salesman there and told him I was an owner.

He asked if I knew of the "trick" of holding down the brake, and the odo reset button, switching on the ignition and praying to Allah three times to unleash a 10,000rpm rev limiter, and 206kw. He was serious! (ok, I made the Allah bit up)

Anyone heard of this trick?

Should have asked him to come out to your car and show you.

Never heard of it.

No way?!! Seriously?!! I get my 8 back tonight from having the sunroof tightened and drivers seat de-squeaked. I'll try it straight away!!! Have you had any luck? Has anyone tried this?

Surely if it were true we'd have heard of it long, long ago. There's nothing this forum doesn't know about RX8s!!

very much pulling your leg . If you have seen dynos of 8's you would know there would be way less power at 10000 than there is at the peak 8500 so there is absolutely no way .......

That wasn't Eurocars at Artarmon was is? I spoke to a guy there and I told him that I have an RX8 and it has no ***** and either does the series 2 coming out.He said there was a special way to get a lot more power from them.I sort of brushed it off and dismissed it without letting him go on, thinking that he was talking s***t..
(I do think that an RX8 could easily rev to 10k but there would be no power increase up there)

Even if it were to release extra power throughout the rev range, I would be surprised that a simple software upgrade or reprogramming wouldn't find a way to unleash the extra power anyway. I call BS but would be keen to try it anyway. If anything it'll be waste of a few moments and I am desperate for cheap power .

On the rev limit increase, IMO rev limiters are there for a reason. Revving to 10K on a regular basis can't be good for the logevity of the engine.

Edit: Just went out and tried it and you wouldn't believe what happened! My odometer reset itself!

I'd be in for that. I know with the STi Liberty they just remove a jumper or something and it gives them an extra 20 or 30kw ... same thing with the B4 before it.

I turn the engine on.

Salesmen will tell you what you want to hear and in our case....more power.
He could at least have mixed a bit of truth into it, like saying that it restores it to the original 188kw. Where does 206kw come from?

Go back and tell him he has 100% guaranteed buyer if he can make it happen. With 10,000,000 people on the internet as my witnesses I will buy the RX-8 for full RRP that the dealer can show that trick working.

Cheers

Andrew

That is how you reset the pcm!
If you press and release the odo button after that the pcm goes through some tests. To stop the tests you can just switch of the ignition and start your car. This prosess resets the pcm's short term memory. Do it...Might make a diff. on how the car drives for a while!

I recall reading somewhere on these pages that Mazda sales people are taught that the typical RX8 buyer has many attributes including a higher than average intellect. At the time I had just purchased my new R X8 and that little snippet of information made me feel a tad smug. After perusing this particular thread an unwelcome tinge of doubt has surfaced...........

As posted by MazdaManiac.....

There are two reset procedures, one for the NVRAM and the other for the KAM. Neither will erase your radio presets and such like the method SpooledUp7 posted:

1) With the key in the off position, press and hold the odometer reset button and turn the key to on;
Continue to hold the odo button until the odometer reads "TEST" and then release.
2) Turn the key to off and repeat step one.

This will reset the entire PCM except the KAM which contains the sensor profiles amongst other things. You can reset it with the familiar procedure:

1) Turn the key to on
2) Depress the brake pedal rapidly 20 times in a row until the oil pressure gauge sweeps to halfway and back again.

Follow this to see orig. post!

The scary part was he was dead-set serious. He was a youngun, and eventually went on to telling me about his 300kw Evo7.
And Matt, it was Slaven Canberra.

This story rminds me of the car dealer trying to sell me a Nissan Skyline . When I asked him where the battery was he replied "this car is new technology & doesn't have a battery" . I smiled inside and set about trying to find it . After a few minutes I looked in the boot and simply remarked "oh here it is " .
He went away shortly afterwards - his credibility in tatters .

By Odometer, I believe he meant trip meter. No way you can reset the odometer that easy...surely not!
