Audi's Diesel Supercar

http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2536/

This should come as no surprise, since they've done so well with their R10 in ALMS, but a diesel supercar is something I thought I'd never see. Who knows? It could work.

738lb-ft of torque is hard to resist. I'll take one in black please...

493hp/738 ft lbs of torque and yet 23 mpg. Makes you want to cry doesn't it?

I'm a huge fan of TDI. I hoipe to see more cars with it appear on the market. Although diesel is more expensive than gasoline, we need more of them. Any vehicle over 4000 lbs should ONLY be available with a diesel engine and hybrids should be diesel electric. That would be much more efficient.

Just a thought, if every manufacturer converted to diesel, wouldn't the price of diesel go down?

ummm, 492Hp and 738Lbs ft of torque. And yet Audi makes a claim of 62mph in 4.2 seconds?? A decade ago, that would of been a nice figure, But still nothing to get exciting about. I really don't like the Audi R8 it reminds me of the Acura NSX, good looks with good handling yet underpowered.

yes, the torque is impressive to look at... But a claim of 4.2 seconds? 0 to 62mph isn't very impressive.

And besides DIESEL should only be used in trucks and not sports cars. If youre spending $120,000+ on a car, you dont care about fuel economy.

Wow, when did a 4.2 to 60 suddenly become unimpressive? That's damn nice.

I know some people think a diesel doesn't belong in a sports car but other people say a rotary doesn't belong in any car so go figure. A high performance engine is a high performance engine. I personally like diesel and if I could run a rotary on it, I would!

They offer a gas powered version which has won "automobile of the year" so it can't be too bad and the comparison tests I've read have it right up in the mix (power-wise) of the more expensive Ferrari's and Porsche's that were tested with it...

Who says diesel was only for trucks? Have you ever been outside of America? America is the only place where diesel is used mostly in trucks? There is a whole other world of diesel powered vehicles out there.

A manufactures claim of "4.2" probably translates to "3.8" or better as most German companies are usually conservative in their claims. Besides there wasn't many stock cars that could hit 60 that quick just 15 or so years ago let alone a diesel powered car.

Someone spending 120k on a car might have the money to pay for fuel economy but that doesn't mean they don't care. It could be the image they are after. Why is there a $112k Hybrid Lexus LS600 or what ever. People who buy that aren't worried about scraping the floorboard for gas money.

How many other diesel production cars can claim a 0-60 that quick?

the 0-60 time might be that "slow" because the car can't get traction with the much torque, thats a crap load of torque, I wanna see a dyno sheet.
