If you are talking about OEM RX-8 plugs (RE7CL, RE9BT), do not run trailing plugs in your leading position. They are too short and the electrode design will induce shrapnel.

Either run correct OEM plugs in their proper positions or run RX-7 trailing plugs (BUR9EQP [NGK-5255])in the leading position for turbo applications if so desired.
I picked up some NGK BUR9EQ-T plugs and I plan to install them on both for leading and trailing.

So if I am reading MazdaManiacs post correctly, I should be using the BUR9EQP in the leading and RE9BT in the trailing. I was told by my local auto parts store that the "P" at the end does not exist.

If your RX8 is Turbo powered, then we recommend all trailing spark plugs. Made by NGK so not stock OEM but we have found they work great for the RX8.

The SKU# is BUR9EQP8. So what does the 8 mean? lol

I just chekced the NGK website and it seems the "P" stands for Platinum.

Standard - BUR9EQ #5483
Laser Platinum - BUR9EQP #5255

Laser Platinum spark plugs provide high ignitability and longer service life. Dual platinum surfaces ensure slow wear rate providing stable idle, superior anti fouling, improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions

The "8" means include shims for the trailing.

Is there an advantage using the BUR9EQP with shims in the trailing over the OEM RE9BT?

Why not just use the BUR9EQP in the leading and RE9BT in the trailing?

Well I am gonna take MM's advice (again)

I bought two BUR9EQP and two RE9BT and returned my BUR9EQ plugs.

Holly crap these RE9BT are expensive! They are 3X the price of the BUR9EQP.

Because those are rx7 plugs and need shims to fit correctly. Warped rotor housings, etc.

That does not explain what the advantage is to use the rx7 plugs in the trailing location.

There is no advantage other than price.
The 7 plugs are cheaper, but since they are 2mm longer, you need shims (which I don't trust).
That's about it.

We have been using these plugs in RX-7's for years so when the random ping Greddy turbo kit was released it reduced the chances of broken motors a little. There are much more expensive alternatives out there though, Scott

The '7 plugs are fine. You just need the shims for the trailing.
I know that keeps getting reitterated around here, but the question keeps coming up.
Scott, I realize that you sell them with the shims, but many folks will be buying them from NAPA or something similar without the shims and the damage to the housing is documented.

I am surprised how good my stock plugs look after 29,000km (18,000miles) and about 12,000km (7500miles) was with the turbo installed.

I noticed zero difference with the new plugs but it was not a complete waste of time because the OEM leading plugs (RE7C-L) run too hot with a turbo.

Ηι everybody,

I just bought new spark plugs which seem to be the NGK 6700-6701 codes but the packaging is different from the one I new.
Naturally, the difference should be only the new packaging.
However, I post some photos here in case that someone knows this type of packaging and explain to me why NGK has two types of packaging.

Those are definately the OEM plugs that I had in my 8.

You can install them with confidence as long as you put them in the proper placement.

Thanks.

Do you personally have seen a different packaging for those spark plugs? If yes why different packaging exists?

What do you mean by different packaging ? compare to other NGK plugs or ? those are the right packaging for these plugs. other piston engine NGK plugs have a blue box packaging.

If thats what you're asking, because these plugs are special for rotary only, and its Laser Iridium.

Well does anybody know what is the difference here? They are the same spark plugs but they have different part number. The screenshots were taken from http://www.ngk.co.uk/ and http://www.ngksparkplugs.com

As long as it's an NGK RE9B-T the stock# is irrelevant.

Who cares about the paper box ... you're not using that for your car.

As long as its the same plugs, why would you even care what the box looks like.

+1
Plus silver is more ballin packaging then yellow anyways you now have bling factor. Tape them on the outside of your car for extra points at the car show!
