Offset and effect on steering etc.

I read a bunch of threads and searched for info. about how changing offset affects steering and handling ... and YES, there is some good info.

But I'm a bit freaked out by it. I went with a +40 offset and I definitely feel a difference. Not sure if everything is out of whack now. Getting used to it but I would like to hear from others who have offsets as great or greater than this and how your steering/handling feels. I got an alignment after my springs and everything is balanced. Still feels different from stock (not the spring effect, just the offset), of course.

So, is it cool to go with offset other than +50 and will I get used to it after a while? Anybody want to offer some reassuring words telling me it's all gonna' be okay, chill, etc.?

It's more than just the offset that will change your handling. It's also the tire width, tire quality, etc. My wheels are AME Circlar Spec-R 19x10 +45/+50 with 285 Toyo Proxes T1R.

Thanks Throwdown. The only thing I've changed is the offset and wheel weight (25 lbs rather than 22 lbs), still using stock tires, properly inflated. But also lowered. Anyhow, I am definitely getting used to the slightly different feel. BTW, I like the Proxes, too.

Offset does have alot to do with it though being that your changing the centerline of the tires contact patch...I'm sure with those offsets your getting alot of involuntary movement in the steering wheel

I had 16"s on my car. Went with 18X7 & 18X8 with a 40off set. The car feels way better than stock as far as taking and making U turns. There is some bog down when wot but once I'm in 3rd its all good. It did take some getting used to at first. I think when I lower the car it will be much better.
If you run a 18X7 or 8 in the front & 18X8 or 9.5 in the back you will make turns on a dime. But if you have 18X8.5 & 18.9.5 you cant turn that good. Its like driving a turck with mud tires lol

What about if you ran a set of 245/40 tires with a set of rims 18x8.5. How much would that effect performance?

You are stretching the wheel over the tire so its not going to have that bounce back when coming out of the apex like a fat tire or one with out a hard side wall. So IMO, but some might contend and argue with me on this one, You get a more consistent grip.

The actual tire would have more relevance in this situation. It's not that big of a difference over stock. Also, what offset are your 8.5" wheels? I don't think anyone can really feel a 10mm change in offset.

so what about 18x8 all around with +35 offset? I keeping the same tire as stock. How would that change the handle of the car?

I think that would be okay but pushing it a little. I'm sure there are others here with that offset doing just fine. I'm totally used to the +40 offset now but I don't want to go any lower. My next wheels will be between 40-50.
