Having a bad leak out the back of the reverse gear detent switch (I'm presuming that is what it is .
Anyway - it seems to be coming out of a small tear in the black plastic cap atv the back of it .
Is there some kind of gunk I can smear over it to seal it up or am I going to have to get a new one ?

 

i would pull the cap... clean the f out of it and then silicon is you friend... i would do it from the inside if you can..

a photo would be nice.. i might have the part...

Hi swoope - yeah , I tried silicone but I think I need special oil resistant stuff . I have pulled it out & there is nothing I can do on the inside as it is a sealed unit .

Do you have a complete spare trans you can scavenge off ?

The dealer found mine was leaking the last time I had the car in for service. It was replaced under warrenty.

 

Just had my 2nd reverse switch start leaking - that is your old one Swoope .

Wonder if it is a common issue ?

 

maybe,

it can happen faster if you have modified the exhaust in any way..

but the switch i sent you was off a 05 tranny with 6k miles on it..

Midpipe is stock (gutted cat) . I think it's to do with tracking the car - maybe .

hi.. i have issues with the reverse switch oil leak. swoope mentioned about the modified exhaust so here we go..

The Car:
04 - Rx-8 - 6 Speed Manual
BHR Coils
AutoExe Exhaust
No Cat (straight custom pipe)
9K Miles

The Problem:
Gear oil leaks from the reverse switch.

Solutions tried so far:
Rubber/silicon seal (lasted about 3 weeks)
Custom made leather gasket (lasted about 1 month)

Any suggestion(s) would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

yep - get a new switch and shield it from the exhaust heat .

The neutral switch is next to the cat. The reverse switch is on the other side of the car. I recently had to replace the neutral switch.

 

im getting the same leak... same switch too.

I almost want to just through some rtv on it

 

My switch started dripping with only 500 miles on the car.

The replacement, now nearly 4 years old, is still drip-free.

 

it seems like it leaks from around where it bolts to the transmission

The two switches (Neutral Safety Switch and Reverse/Back-up Switch) are they interchangeable?

 

No, they are not. They are different sizes where they screw into the trans.

i sent the reverse sensor switch in my spare tranny down under.. !

used the other switch to fix the same problem. the answer is once it fails. the leak is permanent..

YEP, as a replacement part they are Both the Same....Y612-17-640B, this Neutral Switch is used also as the Reverse Switch.

 

Any recommendations for shielding the exhaust heat?

Curious bc I'm replacing my switch, and don't want to have to do this again in the future.

 

I can say after struggling with my neutral safety switch this afternoon and realizing that I was shipped the wrong switch. The head of the snesor is the same size, but the threaded portion on the neutral switch has a larger diameter than the reverse switch.
