Personally, I have to drive hard AND in hot temps (>90F) before I notice the fan running after shutdown. Since I got the car in a February, I'd been driving it for some time before it first happened. Shockingly loud the first time you hear it! And you think "omg there goes my battery"

Not ....
The thing you see from the front is actually the a/c condensor.
You can check whether the fans are working by pulling out the two relays, one at a time, and jumpering the two big contacts - the fans should spin (you can hear it, you don't need to see it).
If they are working, you just have to trust that the ECU will use 'em when it needs'em.

I've had to do this to my buddy's rx7 his relays went bad and he over heated =( but luckly turned it off immediately. It was the high speed relay that went out so when the car was high temp it wouldn't turn on.

honestly, if you dont think its overheating i wouldnt worry about the fans. but if you want to see if they work just turn your a/c on, the fans will come on with the a/c command. this checks the fan motors, wiring and relays... but not the coolant temp sensor. turn a/c off and set parking brake. hold engine rpms at about 3k for 3-4 minutes... thats my engine over-heat/thermostat/cooling fan test. works well for me
of course adjust your coolant to proper level
