Need advice with Tire/Sus. issue

Let me take you through the quick history:

1.) Installed RB springs(1/2" lower) on all corners, using the stock shocks and stock 225/45/18 tires with no issues what-so-ever. Ran this way for three weeks.

2.) Put new rims on, same as stock(8" wide) up front and went 9" wide in the rear(still at stock 18" diameter). I really shouldn't have....but I was waiting on new tires and had the 225/45/18's(Stock) put on both front and back. Drove for about a week and again had no issues.

3.) Put new tires 255/40/18's on the rear and now I have some short duration rubbing happening back there when going over even what I consider relatively small bumps. I believe it's happening on both sides depending on the bump and how I take the bump(of course).

4.) I haven't actually measured the distance between the top of the tire and the fender yet. #3 only happened yesterday.

What do I do now?
Is there something I'm missing?

1.) Go back to stock springs? How do I know that's going to cure it?

2.) I'm not going to go buy some 255/35/18's so that's out.

3.) Roll the fenders?

4.) Replace the stock shocks in back with something else? Will that even cure it?

I'm open to suggestions.

I need to really get out there and see how much clearance there is when loaded and unloaded. I believe unloaded there is somewhere around one inch or so, but unsure.

Thanx,

Dave

p.s. What a good way to find out where rubbing is occuring?

RB springs only lower it very little, so I don't think it's spring related. But I don't have experience with lowering spring on this car, so I can't speak for sure. Your tires are only marginally taller than stock, they shouldn't be the problem either.

First thing comes to mind is the offset on your rear wheels. If there is too little offset, you could be pushing the wheels too far out and hit the fender.

Next are the dampers. Does the rear keep bouncing off the bumps or does it settle quickly? If it keeps bouncing, your dampers could be bad, causing too much vertical motion in the rear.

If you still can't find it. Then may be it was something else, not wheel/tires related. Or may be you are just going too fast over bumps.

Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Offset is +38............stock is +50(I Think)
Doesn't really bounce at all..........that's what has me perplexed.
I'm not talking potholes or anything, so it's not that much of a bump.
Not familiar with the term dampers, but obviously the new tires caused the issue, so it either has to be the marginally taller than stock, or a combo of taller than stock and out just a little further right?

Measured this morning and I have about 1 1/8" clearance between back tire and fender well at the closest point, which is straight up at 0 degrees.

With a 9" wide wheel, you're pushing the the outter rim 1/2" out with stock offset. With your 38mm offset, you're pushing another 1/2", so now you're 1" out compare to stock. That's a significant amound IMO. With the slightly taller tires, I wouldn't be surprised if they rub. Check your fender, you may find marks where they rub.

Assuming that's what happend, short of getting wheels with closer to stock offset or a little shorter tires, the only temp fix I can think of is maybe put in a little more rear camber. I'm just thinking out loud here, I don't think adding rear camber would do much but create other poblems like handling/tire wear.

Damper is just a more technical/correct term for shocks and struts.

Yeah, have your fenders rolled so it doesn't rub.

Yep, stock offset is 45mm your offset is incorrect. Don't know if you can run 245's.

255's is out of the question using your own experience.

I hear you can really screw the fender if they aren't professional rollers.

stock offset is 50mm...

and the other thing you could do before rolling the fenders is see if there is some room to cut the inside of the rim hub to increase the offset.. this is a bit specialized, but can be done.
