So I got around to painting my brake calipers today with duplicolor's spray paint....a pain in the *** but so far it looks good in the garage.

Couple of questions...

1). Stupid question maybe...is it okay to have some paint on the rotors? I mask taped as much as I could but some paint still got on the rotors, and I wiped them down, but theres still some on. Will it go away after some braking?

2). Do I really have to wait a whole 24 hours before driving? I gotta go out in about 14-15ish. The paint dries pretty quick from what I know...I could touch it after 5 mins and not get my fingers stained.

3). What's the torque setting on the lugnuts again? 87? Searching gave me different results...just looking for a definitive answer.


I used brake cleaner, sanded the calipers and hubs, painted the hubs, painted calipers. I'll get some pics up later.

2 I would drive
3 87 is correct

#3. The stock specification is 87. However, some have noticed a clicking sound from the front wheels when driving at low speeds. The TSB issued my Mazda to correct that problem was to torque it to 105 (I don't know if that's the exact number, but that sounds right).

So, if you hear the clicking, 105. If not, 87.

they raised the wheel lug nut spec to 108 lb-ft period, not just if you hear noise:

u should have completely removed the caliper and did it on a bench, if ur gonna half *** it and paint them, might as well half *** it properly.... not that im approving of the "mod" anyway.....

 

Didn't have the tools to take it off, don't see the problem masking everything and keeping it on. It looks perfect.

 

i did the same raptor, its not half *** at all.

 

i dont think its half assed as well. anyways, with all the questions being answered, your #3 should be at around 108 lb-ft.

Was raining yesterday....I was glad to see the paint hold up when I've only let it dry for about half a day. Will get some shots...

 

Paint's holding up well.

But there's some minor squeeking going on in one of the back brakes, or both, can't tell...only happens sometimes at speeds around 40-50. Not sure what's causing it...

 

 

Nice Job I did mine too but i used the brush on type real easy to use and no overspray

 

Me too.......brushed them on and took my time. Will post a few pics tomotrrow.

 

howd you do the rotor housing without taking the rotor off?

did you just cover everything, then sand and spray the exposed part?

 

The hub of the rotor? Yup.

You also don't have to mask the entire thing....just enough to catch any overspray. My spray out of my duplicolor spray can was pretty tight and accurate.

I did get some paint on my rotors and thought by braking it would all come off...but I'm getting some minor squeaking like I said...I'll try using some brake cleaner on the rotors to get as much as I can off and see if that helps.

Or it could be I need new rear pads, I'm still on the factory ones at 34k miles.

 

Painted dust shields black, Calipers blue, Mazdaspeed by Polak graphics, and the hubs/hats were already black because of the new rotors.
